any way to straighten out the problem of one subject showing up on a different thread?
my reference is to the thread on Kingsley GMC. it also has all the postings for "adding a third tank".

No, not really

This happens when someone, anyone uses "Reply" instead of "New Topic". The software attaches it to the original thread/message even if the creator changes the subject line. (No part of the code ever actually looks at the subject line except to process and publish.)

It does not matter at all to the e-mail readers as they see it one message at a time and never know that the thread on the forum (or digest (if this system publishes - I read the forum) is scrambled and the message that is out of place may be near impossible to re-locate if one desired to do so.

If this is like another forum I used to manage, Patrick would have to get into the server and break the thread and re-link it in real time or very close to same and it is an monumental PITA.

Enough said, I'll go sit down now.

Matt

It is an email thing. Emailers do not use and most do not understand threads. Even more confusing to them is the concept of sub-threads or secondary threads contained within threads. Some emailers sort the responses on their own machines, or in another web based email program, based on subject title which give them some very basic threading but not sub-threading. The forum and most modern web based systems use the message numbers contained in the headers to establish the threads and sub or secondary threads.

When an emailer takes an existing posting and just changes the subject, the original message number being appended to is still contained in the posting. The forum sees the message numbers and posts the message to the correct thread accordingly.

There is not much you can do about the problem except put up with it. Since emailers do not have threading they do not realize they are causing an inconvenience for others.

Just be happy that they post. That is what is most important to all of us.

Maybe we could ask people politely to not "reply" when they start a new topic. It is maddening sometimes, and seems to always happen to the really interesting topics... Rolling Eyes

That's been asked MANY times. But folks forget and newcomers have to learn.
The best solution I've found is GMail. The threads in immediate question
are very nicely separated by GMail with no effort on anyone's part.
Apparently it uses only the subject. Another nice feature which I
especially appreciate is that it automatically hides quoted text so that you
don't have to read all the redundant text most people leave in their
replies.

Not to mention that it saves all this stuff and makes it available to
Google's superb searching.

I generally read the messages on the Digest and reply on the Forum. It keeps the message in the right thread, but I don't miss anything. Sometimes it is hard to find the topic on the Forum if it is buried in a mixed up thread.

Primarily Patrick and a select few others. Since this forum is considered a copy of the email list, most control is done on the email side.
