We just got back from a rally in Temecula Ca. The Norcold 3 way decided to
stop working. Actually it never started cooling at all. I switched from
gas to ac then back to gas. The next troubleshooting item is on the list
is "lay the unit on it's left side for a hour. I did gently tap on the
coils while it was running in both modes. Before Pat and I try to extract
the unit from the coach does anyone else have a suggestion?
Cheers,

Well the one hour on it's side drill suggested in the Norcold produced
nothing. We placed it upside down on a dolly for the night and will try
running it on 110 tomorrow. There was a faint smell of ammonia after we
plugged it in. When we flipped it upside down all kinds of gurgling sounds
could be heard.

Hey Len;
I've had two units in different GMCs stop cooling. One was the
original unit in a Palm Beach, and the other is a 3 year old unit in
the Stretch. With each of them, I have pulled them out, turned them on
their tops and let them stay that way for 24 hours. After
re-installing them, they worked just fine. Just what I did. It was
cheaper than going to the fellow in Indiana, but if it hadn't of
worked I would have called the fellow in Indiana.

Most of the time it is a problem caused by running it while the coach
is off level.
The ammonia in the coil quits circulating and a heat is built up and
the gas/liquid crystallizes so no more circulation.
When customers pull into our shop with refer on, we need to hang a
reminder tag to not jack it up unless we shut it down.

Len,
That ammonia smell is the kiss of death. You have a perforated
cooling unit. Remanufactured units are available (wish I could think
of the place in Santee that has them at the best price) for half the
cost of a new unit.

Howell's RV Appliance Repair. The owner's son in law, Rob, is chief
cook and bottle washer for "Man-Go" RV repair. Rob will come to you.
He doesn't charge as much as he should and there isn't anything on a
GMC he is not capable of easily repairing. He is quite familiar with
them. When he installed my new cooling unit, he did not like the way
I had installed my refer and when he left, it was reinstalled much
more securely than I had done it. He also installed my new Suburban
furnace when the old Solair loudly gave up the ghost a few years back.

We just got back from a rally in Temecula Ca. The Norcold 3 way decided to stop working. Actually it never started cooling at all. I switched from gas to ac then back to gas. The next roubleshooting item is on the list
is "lay the unit on it's left side for a hour. I did gently tap on the coils while it was running in both modes. Before Pat and I try to extract the unit from the coach does anyone else have a suggestion?

I have an earlier Norcold 3 way. Early 90's model.
The power or operation switch is between the freezer and the refrige door.
This tended to be a bad location as the fridge surface would condense water and that would get into the switch.
I have had to change the switch out two times, and all comes back normal.
Sometimes if you move the switch paddle back a forth a couple times you might see the lights flash (if the sw is bad).
It is a 2pdt mini switch that is obtainable most anywhere. If I recall right, only one set of contacs ( spdt) is used. When it went bad one time I just switched the contacts and it was working again.
good luck if this is your problem.

As sight to behold!
I pulled out the cooling unit just for grins, not a really hard task at all.
With the help of Rob's advice over the phone, an expert repairman in San
Diego County I gently tapped (beat) the area near the burner lives while
running the cooling unit on 110 with a very small ball peen hammer. Rob
basically said the unit was plugged and recovery was next to impossible. I
did that several times over an hour after going thru the lay it on it's
side, upside down, tap it with the plastic handle of a screwdriver advice.
It works! We have frost on the upper two cooling coils. I'll run it
several times before I reinstall it back in the frige box, and again back in
the coach.
All I need now is some RV thermal mastic and I should be back in business.
Cheers,

Rob is one of the goofiest guys I've ever met but he is really sharp
on refers, furnaces, AC units etc. He used to work for his FIL
(Howell's RV) then broke away to start his own mobile repair
business. (MANGO RV Repair). Not a more knowledgable guy in SD
county and you always get much more than you should for what he
charges..
