In inquiring about having a set of Cooper tires sent to Europe, this was their reply.
Howard Nylander
********
Good afternoon and many thanks for your enquiry.
Unfortunately the size you have requested, no longer meets EU legislation criteria concerning the Oil content of the tyres.
I am afraid we do not have any other patterns in this size, which are suitable.
Regards.

depends on where in Europe. I know in Germany you have to go in for inspection, and if it doesnt meet the standard then you must change it or the police will take the license plates and not return them until you have corrected the issue.
Unfortunately Europe has gone totally overboard with all the eco BS, its harmed a lot of industry there as well. However we are not far behind im afriad.

I think Howard lives in the USA, but the guy the tires are for is Jeroen in Holland.
I have been away from the EU for over 20 years so I am not familiar with current vehicle laws in the various countries, but sureley exemptions must exist for vehicles classed as classic/historic?(over 25 years old)
As a coincedence I have an Euro spec Toyota Landcruiser FJ40 Diesel here that was imported in to Canada from Holland 5 years ago and its fitted with American Made Armstrong Norsman tires that were on it when it arrived.

I was talking to a lad that had just picked up a Jeep from Japan. This is an older style but newer model. The tires that were on it had to be removed as they are not acceptable here in Canada. I don't know the reason.

You want a better one. I have a friend in Kamloops who imported a used Japanese vehicle. The Canadian customs drilled approximately 1" holes in all 5 tires on the vehicle before allowing it to clear customs. They never explained why and did not have to do anything about replacing the tires they destroyed.

How the Hell can they justify this? Looking for Drugs? Trying to keep the owner from using them? How did they expect the owner to roll the car off of the transport? Jeez. Makes me happy I live in the USA.
What a bunch of dumbass laws.

That is what I said when Doug first told me what happened. He and his son went to Vancouver with a trailer pick it up and bring it home. They did not know about the damage until they got there to pick it up. They ended up taking off the wheels and having new tires installed before they rolled in on the trailer. This happened in early 2008. They have not been able to collect a thing from the government.

Maybe the drug sniffing dog took an interest in the tires due to a dog p*ss smell, and the customs guys took this to mean they were full of dope ?
