Finally I get to put a model and year after my name on this forum!

I just got back from driving my "new" '78 Kingsley the 800 miles from Traverse City MI, to Washington DC. It didn't miss a beat all the way. Going through the receipts it looks like the coach has less than 65,000 miles and the engine less than 15,000 so it all feels very tight, though inevitably there is a list of things to tinker with - and where would be the fun if there wasn't eh?

One thing, the auto- leveling leaves one side much higher than the other. I can adjust it manually, but it looks like I will have to adjust the lever. Also having listened to the level valves there is a very slight hissing from the little tube on the valve that is not connected to anything on the side that is low, which makes me think I need a new valve on that side - unless anyone knows of a different fix...?

Also, the level-check unit by the entry door works when you click it to the right (but no light goes on). When you click it to the left, the light goes on but the gauges don't respond. Any thoughts?

I've been keeping a blog about finding, buying and running this GMC, and will keep it up to date on the two month trip we are hoping to do in the summer. Its here:

http://thegmcproject.blogspot.com/ and if you like it, please click to follow it.

All the best - and thanks for all the help. I hope I am in a position to give some back at some point.

Congratulations Richard, the "Magic Bus" looks like a very nice coach. As for the hissing out of the hose, that is the exhaust bleed. If you loosen the adj nut and raise the arm it should raise the coach and stop hissing. There is a 20 second delay in the valve so don`t expect it to raise immediately. The rear should be about 1" lower than the front. I believe a rough estimate is 33" to top of T-skirt.
As for the level check at the door? I have no idea since my "plain Jane" doesn`t have that option.
Good Luck and Happy motoring...

Richard,

Welcome to the group/cult/asylum.

Two little bits of advise, don't put an @ddress you want to use for anything in the sigfile. Spambots can read the postings without being signed in and when they grad it the @ddress will quickly become useless for anything of value. You can post it as - richard dot lister at yahoo dot com and any human will recognize it and translate same.

Other, add Woodbridge VA to the sigfile, so that those people that might be tempted to offer assistance (you live near a few) will know how close by you are.

And the greeting I try to offer all new owners that is a paraphrase of the waterman's greeting to the owner of a new boat:

May the Good Lord bless this coach and all that set forth within her.

Matt

Richard,
that hose with no connecftion on one of the ends is the bleed air.
When you go from "raise" to "travel" you will hear it hiss. This is
normal.

Richard,
I had a ton of problems adjusting the levelers on my coach. I had
slotted the mounting holes, drilled new mounting holes etc, and even
with all that, I could barely get it correct. All the hassle went
away with a pair of Dave Lenzi's adjustable arms for the leveling
valves. Very simple process now, I don't even get dirty doing it.
There are some excellent ride height setting procedures available on
the GMC tech sites and I suggest you look them up. The one that works
best for me is to pull the front wheels, use mechanical means (jack
stands) to set the front to exactly the correct height, and hold it
there, and set the rear ride height. Make sure it is set correctly by
dumping all the air and letting it rise to the correct setting, then
try full raise and letting it settle to the correct setting. Once you
are assured it will always return to the correct ride height
measurement, you can set the front by adjusting the torsion bar pork
chop bolts.

Richard,
I'm finishing setting my ride height today. Ken H has a gmc album photo and write up that gives measurements and locations. The MM has the diagram. Steve is right. Get the Lenzi adjustable control arms. Piece O cake from there!
