Netters

I'm sending this inquiry on behalf of an off net GMC'r friend, any input appreciated.
(try to hold back on the smart a-s Toyota remarks since I have two parked in the driveway and I'm very sensative (not) <G> and we already beat them up in a previous thread. (VBG)

Here is my friends message.

Dick: We have the 2010 Prius with us here in Florida. We plan to return to Pa. in early May by way of the Dixielander;s Bean Station Rally in Tenn.. Rather than drive two vehicles, I am looking at towing The Prius on a rented Tow Dolly from U-Haul. The Prius can't be towed 4 down due to the electric motor and regen braking.

I am attempting to get information on how to prep the Prius for towing, i.e., how to disengage the steering wheel lock, take it out of "park" (which is automatic when you turn the vehicle off), etc.. One person had a Prius with him at the Lazyday's rally in fla. in January. I don't know if he towed it or drove it to the rally (he lives fairly close to the rally site being from Orlando). In any case, I sent him an E-Mail asking questions, but his reply may be "I don't tow it".

Would you be able to ask your GMC contacts if any of them have experience towing a Prius, especially a 2010 Prius. I have never used a dolly but I expect the front wheels should be out of lock in order to follow the dolly. Since th "park" is automatic, maybe it should just stay in "park" if park is only on the front wheels. Also I don't know how the steering wheel lock works.
Bob

I tow a 2006 front wheel drive Toyota Corolla with a tow dolly.
I do not unlock the steering. I drive it on the dolly, centered and
as straight as I can. Strap the front wheels put pin in rail and go
down the road. Do not try to back up. Nothing goes where you
want it to. If the prius is front wheel drive it should work fine.
Easy as 1,2,3. Expect 2 mile per gallon drop in fuel economy.

1. As long as the dolly has a built in pivot, it SHOULD work just fine... check the instructions on the dolly. U-Haul instructions say the steering HAS to be locked or secured. <http://www.uhaul.com/guide/index.aspx?equipment=towing-towdolly>

2. Front wheel drive cars (Automatics) with the front wheels on the dolly should be in park.

3. If still not comfortable with it, rent a trailer rather than a dolly.

Really only found one reply to a similar post on the FMCA site, along with one that suggests reading the fine print in the owner's manual which is always a good idea.

I own '07 Prius and utilize tow-dolly, which is approved by Toyota(4-down is not). If anyone discovers towing Prius four-down, please advise . The Prius tows great on a tow-dolly.

Dick,

I did a Google Search "towing a Prius" and several sites ala the GMCnet came
up with responses to the question.

Personally I would visit the nearest Toyota Dealer and ask them.

How's that for demonstrating an acute grasp on the obvious! ;-)

I have dragged my 08 Prius about 7000 miles in 3 trips twice behind the GMC and once behind a U-Haul, I dragged the dolly back home behind the prius. The only trouble I had was the spoiler hits going on and off. I am going to try some 2 by 10 at top of ramps to see if it will clear.

I leave it in park, Ing off, doors locked. My dolly has pivot and brakes.
