[GMCnet] TRC: do without? [message #76658] Sun, 14 March 2010 20:38 Go to next message

My coach is a California model, which means it has the TRC (Throttle Return Control), whose only function in life is to gently return the throttle to idle upon deceleration. It uses a rather considerable amount of hoses, a vacuum control solenoid, a vacuum control valve and a throttle lever vacuum actuator, just do to that.

My TRC parts are all broken. The solenoid, in particular, basically fell apart as soon as I touched it, so did the throttle level actuator. The vacuum control valve may be OK, not entirely sure.

I am wondering whether I should attempt to rebuild this subsystem, or whether I could do without - given its rather limited use (very transient emissions reduction).

The big questions are:
- Will it harm anything to not reinstall it? (Since this was a California-only option, I'd be inclined to thing that it would work fine without...)
- The dreaded question, is it a requirement to pass the smog test? Do they check for this?
- And finally, if I do have to rebuild/reinstall it, where might I find these parts? I definitely need the solenoid and the actuator, and possibly also the control valve...

I'd appreciate any insights on this! I'm quite concerned about that...

I heard that California exempts cars that are built before 1975 from emissions testing, but I don't know the year of your GMC or if the exemption applies to motorhomes!

To be safe, it may not be a bad idea to have the parts in place and hooked up as California seems to be the land of the emissions police. They may have some provisions for unavailable parts, but don't count on it.

I think my coach has this too, as it was a California model. It has so much extra crap that leaks in the vac system, this makes sense that it may be that. I cannot vouch for any other smog check, but in AZ, they never check under the hood on vehicles without catalytic converters, no reason to, I guess. They never look at mine. HTH.

The short answer is "no problem I have had my '76 smogged many times in CA"
The Long answer is that it is a Federal offense to tamper with pollution control equipment but.... To the best of my knowledge test stations are not required (allowed) to disassemble any part of the vehicle as part of the test, meaning removal of the air cleaner. Secondly, They do not make a distinction between CA and 49 state vehicles They will check for the air cleaner pre heat hose since that can be seen without dis-assembly.
Just my experience, your mileage may very.
