Great, too bad I didn't know this earlier, but like Matt it's on the list. I would imagine that you can get the old out and new in from the bottom and would necessitate the removal of the fan clutch and blade assembly, any quirks I should know about the install? Fairly easy? unbolt drop through bottom and reverse for install.
Thanks!

Geez! Talk about mission creep.

The guy wants to change a fan belt and the forum has him replacing the whole darned cooling system - and then some.

I struggled with replacing fan belts for HOURS over a several week period. I bought tools and listened to all the tips.

I finally took my coach to a mechanic who charge 1/4 or 1/2 hour labor to do the darned job. THere are "tricks" a pro will employ (and you'll feel foolish that you couldn't figger it yourself).

I vote for hiring it done and paying extra to have the mechanic ALLOW you to watch. Then go to a convention and try it again with some of our "experts"<G>.

Jim, I am laughing at your comment, it is true, but that is how the group here works. Over kill is the name of the game. Replacing the shroud will make many jobs much easier in the future. Jim K. sells Bert and Fay's split shroud. I don't think Jack will want one but many others here might. You will not believe how easy it makes the jobs by just dropping the bottom off. We put one on our coach. I never thought I would have to take bottom off, WRONG. Was no time and I was glad I had the split shroud. We did mine at Bean Station where Ken B. did a lot of the work with me. That guy is as handy as a pocket on a shirt. Plus, as Steve said, it gets rid of all of that heavy, ugly junk up there. Cleans up the front of engine, in case you have a glass engine cover. Very Happy

I can change out the fan clutch without removing any part of that
shroud. Same for the water pump.

Hey Dan,
I'm glad you smiled. I was only HALF kidding.
I still get tightness in the back of my head when I remember that fan-belt-fiasco. (and I don't even own the GMC anymore ;-(

Seriously, I struggled with that job 'til it mentally paralized me.

The really funny thing: I was doing preventive maintainence. My belts were fine. I put on new ones so (having spares I KNEW fit) I'd never be stuck somewhere hunting for the correct replacements.

Enjoy your blog. Keep it up.

Ok Jim. I know how you feel about the overkill. Gets to all of us sometimes. I do not do preventative maintenance on the belts. When they are not squeeling I don't bother them. I do carry the correct belts on board and have changed them on the road. But, I can do it pretty fast now. Like Steve, I dont remove the lower half of shroud. I do it all lying inside the coach.
Thanks for following us on the blog. run with us tomorrow. WE are leaving Lordsburg about 1030 in the morning, with Jim and Grace.

Mr. Fisher:

The nice looking coach with both rear air bags down is still available; I
asked your opionion on this several weeks ago, you replied, sending me
complete instructions, with photos, regarding air bag replacement. However,
due to computer problems, I deleted the email before printing out the
instructions.

I would greatly appreciate the favor if you would please send the
instructions again. But this time, please use my other email address:
van.one@gmail.com

Thank you,

I changed all of the belts on my GMC about an hour after I bought it in the parking lot of an Holiday Inn.

Took about an hour (maybe an hour and a half), It was pouring with rain and I only got a bit wet when I had to go under the front end to loosen and later tighten the lower bolt on the power steering pump bracket.

Never experienced any real problems despite the fact I had never worked on a GMC Motorhome before.

If you are not mechanically inclined , weak/feable or dont like getting dirty or burnt/cut/grazed you should leave the job to a pro mechanic IMO. Laughing

Good call, I had new belts and did not change for my first trip cause they "looked new". I made it 250 miles to a dark exit ramp in Atlanta, 2 in the morning and of course raining. That ps bolt can be got to from the inside if you stand on your head.
since then I have put a new set on with the ac compressor, then with the ps pump, then with the fan clutch. It is getting easier..
