What is all of that racket? It sounds like the fan is hitting the radiator or something.
I was expecting to see some burnouts or something......Nothing

It sounded worse on the video than it really is. It IS quite noisy at
idle (like most old tech diesels), but as soon as Manny comes off the
idle step and it is not too bad.

Thanks Gary,
I thought I detected a "hint" but my pappa taught me to never assume!
Does anyone have any details on how much oil pan rework was required to do
the 4BT swap? The Cummins "BT series" engines have a fairly long stroke, so
crank clearance must be tight around the drive axle. I'd sure like to do a
4BT swap. A 6BT would be even better, but due to length, I doubt it's even
possible without major work up front.
I need to give Manny a call about some transmission problems when he is back
in his shop, so I'll try to pry some info out of him about his engine swap
while we are talking.
Thanks,
Les Burt

I would think the big Isuzu NPR truck diesel engines would be a good choice because:
1. They are already in Motorhome service on some SOB's
2. They are regularly bolted to GM Automatics (Albiet Chevy pattern no doubt)
3. They are pretty quiet
4. There are a lot of those trucks around, so parts and service should be easily available.
5. They are four-bangers so they should fit. A five should fit too if there are any.

OK, a little late here but I have been thinking about this. The 4bt is good for about 130hp in stock form and around 300 on the torque. They can be boosted to a reliable 160-170hp. Is that enough to move a GMC around comfortably? I think the mileage gains would be worth it in the long run and these are 300,000 mile engines. No tune ups per se and mechanical fuel injection that any truck stop will have parts for really adds to the reilability factor. Again, I would love to know how it does out on the road with a toad. Since the GMC uses a BOP pattern, did Manny have to make an adapter or is there one available?

I think Manny is going to pump it up a little with a bigger turbo.
He's got to be careful, cause I guess the 425 transmission is only
good for around 500lb/ft of torque. With the diesel, a jump in 10 or
20 horsepower translates into a lot of torque, and with the rpms that
he is turning (different final drive ratio, 6-speed transmission
(switch-pitch), reversed Caspro gears), it's all about the torque. Of
course, this is just me guessing. The custom designed engine to
transmission adapter is a work of art. I really want to go for a drive
in this thing, and I think he could charge for a couple of laps around
the fairgrounds.
