We can find 'most any number you'd like for the number of moving parts in an
automobile; at any rate, there a lots of them -- certainly over 5000.
So, when buying a junkyard part, it's a pretty safe bet that the one we get
is not the one that caused the car to be junked, and that it has a
reasonable lifetime remaining.
Well, you might know: Despite the odds, I got the part that caused one
Cadillac to be junked. :-(
I finally got my Cad 500 installation to the point today that I could crank
it. There were a couple of glitches (otherwise known as dumb screw-ups),
but when I finally started it, it ran and made it to 1800-2000 rpm for about
10 minutes. It wasn't running good, and changing the timing didn't help
much, but it was headed toward the target of 20-30 minutes at 1800-2200 rpm
for cam/lifter break in. Then it quit. After a minute of bare head
scratching, I tried again and it started up, only to quit within 30 seconds.
Despite the break in protocol, I had no choice but to keep trying to start
it -- numerous times it did the same thing. I could see the injectors
firing, so I knew I had fuel. And there was no doubt I had compression, so
it had to be ignition related, and the flashing timing light showed I had
spark. Changing timing settings, repeatedly pulling the distributor cap and
resetting the static timing, reviewing the EFI wiring, all yielded the same
result: Crank, start, run 10-30 seconds, die.
Finally, I pulled the ignition module from the Old's CCD and installed it in
the Cad's -- instant start and 30 minute run with no more interruptions.
HOORAY!!! The eBay-purchased junkyard CCD wasn't such a bargain after all.
:-( (Actually, it was -- if I bother to exercise the warranty, they'll
replace it.)
That was about 1645, so I shut it down for the day. It still needs EFI
tuning, and I've got some oil line drips to cure (I made copper gaskets for
them before quitting for the day), and LOTS of cleaning up to do, but if I
have any luck left in my account, we'll launch for Montgomery within a
couple of days.

I once got the part that DID cause the crash. I went to the men's mall to
get a brake fitting for a 34 Ford I was building. The fitting was on the
back of the master cylinder and was the main attach for the line to all 4
wheels. When I removed it there was a split "O" ring crammed tightly into
the end. Clearly the cause of what had been a serious bump.

Ken, I had the same thing happen to me when starting my new engine and
it turned out to be the ing. modual delco dead, put in a new one and
everything was ok.

Carleton,
It was an ACDelco that failed in mine too. The replacement, from a Cardone
rebuild, is "no name" -- but it's working right now. I'm for sure going to
get and carry a spare.
