I have been trying to find my trouble with my 1977 Kingsley motorhome running badly. Took apart the carb trying to find out if needle and seat were dirty, installed new spark plugs, new plug wires, with no good results. Finally ran a compression test on the # 3 cylinder because that old plug was black and the results were absolutly no compression at cranking speed. Took off valve cover and discovered the valve springs are not broken and are working. The next step is to take off cylinder head. Must be a hole in a piston or a badly burned exhaust valve. Next I applied air pressure to the #3 spark plug hole and I could hear the leak in the exhaust pipe. I am not looking forward to tearing down the engine to get the head off. I'm TOO OLD for that. I will begin a search for a shop in the Fort Worth, Texas area. DOES ANYONE HAVE SUGGESTION ABOUT WHO?

Don,
If you heard air at the exhaust pipe it is more apt to be a
bad valve than the piston. Piston you would hear
at the oil fill tube and the PVC valve hole.
No help with Ft Worth Mechanics. Everyone in this area
that I know has done an engine, did their own R&R.

If you do your own R&R I have a friend that would probably
loan you his engine removal dolly/track for up and out removal.
I will loan you my frame for down and out removal if you want
to go that way.. Get with me off the list if you decide to go either
route. Also let us know if you find someone in the area that will
do the R&R.

Pulling the Olds head isn't rocket science most any gear head can do it. If you are on a limited budget and have the tze shop manual for a reference you might consider going to your local Auto zone or Kragen and ask the counter person if any of the guys do repair work on the side. If you are lucky you will find a young man with a strong back and the wrenches needed for the job.
After he pulls the head you can take it or both heads to your trusted machine shop for a valve job and your young man can reassemble it with the aid of your shop manual.
While in Blythe & Quartzite this year the clutch went out in my Toyota pic up.I knew how to replace it but couldn't do it in the camp ground and I needed a younger strong back. At the local Kragen I found a young man to do the grunt work and all he wanted was $50 bucks to help. He and his buddy did it in 4 hours and that included running around to get the parts and surfacing the flywheel. I gave him $100.
