Anyone have their 2 cents worth to comment on gas tank sealers.
If you didn't do it last time the tanks were down, will you do it this time?

That price is now $400 per tank at the Rockford , IL Renu facility. May
still be worth it if you got lots of crud.

If you don't have experience welding/cutting on gas tanks, it's best you leave that to someone else (they like to go boom!) who does this routinely. I had mine cleaned and sealed: not cheap, but may be worth avoiding further hassles if your fuel system is suspect.

I'm leaning toward this POR 15 product. They have a pretty stout reputation.
http://www.por15.com/US-STANDARD-TANK-SEALER/productinfo/TSG/
Literature states that sealing is unnecessary unless leaking from pinholes. Just use their Marine-Clean to rid rust of tanks and keep tanks full of fuel. They claim superiority over 2 other competitors on the Alcohol issue. Ketone/PVC based sealer turns to mush with the gasohol and is still being sold. No name known.
Looking at @ $140 for both tanks for the 3 ingredients.

I have never used their tank kit, but I sure can endorse POR-15 for other items. I just painted a battery box on my Blazer with the stuff 2 weeks ago. I also used it on the floor below my house batteries a couple of years ago. That stuff is like stone after it dries.
Highly recommended. If you use it on something that gets exposed to the sun, top coat it with regular paint.

Welding on gas tanks is usually a bad idea. Here is an option to
consider:

At $400 to renew ONE tank... Just wondering, how much do brand new tanks cost? I do not see them listed on any web sites but I know someone bought a pair a few years ago. (Rick D. ?)
On a side note, years ago someone was talking about a slightly larger tank that fit in the same space. If buying new tanks....

in the 1970s and 80s I used Kreem on motorcycle tanks......on anything with 4 wheels and above I use POR-15......the stuff is super tough.......while doing a pair of GMC tanks I spilled some por-15 on the shop floor, forgot about it and after drying, I still cannot scrape the por-15 up after 3 years........I also coat the fuel filler tubes with por-15 on gmcs when doing tanks......
as for cleaning here locally we have the tanks media blasted with either soda or walnut shells or there are a couple of shops that will dip your tanks in a cleaning solution...............
if your tanks are rustd out, there should be plenty of used tanks available ..........

Mills,
Never weld on a gas tank. Many years ago there was a terrible explosion at
the Chevy shop in Norman, OK., caused by a mechanic welding on a gas tank on
a car. The welder was killed. He was supposed to run water into the tank
for an hour before the explosion, but it did not work; he still was killed.
While restoring a Honda motorcycle, before painting the gas tank, I ran a
hose from the exhaust pipe of my car, put the end into the mc tank, ran the
car engine for 30 minutes or so, then passed a flame from a torch over the
tank opening. There was a little rumbling, but no explosion. I used roofing
nails in the tank instead of walnut shells, shook it around for most of a
day, cleaned it out good.
J. L. Vanlandingham

Hi All
Darren built a 60 gallon aluminum tank with a side fill. He said he could
hold the pump nozzle fully open until it clicked off and not spill a drop of
gas. He had to remove a cross member so the used the tank and the internal
baffle as a replacement cross member.
Here is a photo of the new filler on the side. I think it came from a Dodge
van.
