Chris,
I looked at that puller but for the life of me I couldn't figure out which
part went over the bearing to pull it off the hub!
The large black piece that appears to have a split in it does not appear to
have a large enough OD to fit over the bearing to pull it off the hub.
I would like to satisfy my curiosity and was wondering if anyone has a
puller like this and can take some pictures that show how it works.
Plus what is the red domed thing for?

Gene,
I intended to send you a cc. on the note I sent to Jim, but I forgot. Here
it is:
Jim,
Thanks for your note on jacks. I hope to try it out tomorrow.
FYI - I am a 89 year old WWII disabled vet who is about to buy his first GMC
motorhome. It is a "cream puff", very low mileage, has been parked out in
the country for several years. The motor and tranny are very good, but the
rear air bags are down. I made him a cash offer, as is where is, and he
took it.
My question: How do I get it home, about 30 miles, with the rear air bags
down?
NO. I wasn't a desk jockey in the Marines, I was a survivor of "The Long
Patrol". a ,member of Col. Carlson's Marine Raiders (2E). If I get this GMC
to where it will take me to the next meeting I will tell you some of the
things I learned in the Raiders, such as 10 ways to kill an enemy quietly
and quickly in hand-to-hand combat.
No doubt you have heard that if you can do it, it ain't bragging.

Jesse,
I hate to be a wet blanket, but I'm concerned about your choice of a GMC. A
"cream puff" that's "...been parked out in the country for several years..."
is a disaster, or two or ten, waiting to happen. There are so very many
things that deteriorate while sitting that even a short trip "home" is
likely to be plagued with numerous, serious, and potentially expensive
catastrophes.
Start with tires: "...parked...for several years..." means they've probably
long since exceeded their design life, much less the more conservative life
we've learned to require on GMC's. They have not been exercised frequently
so the rubber plasticizers which keep the rubber supple have not been
distributed as is necessary. The weight bulge near the ground has probably
opened cracks down to the body cords, allowing moisture to reach and attack
them, further weakening the tires; it may have even reached the steel belts
and rusted those. Even 30 miles home may be more than the tires are up to,
and a blowout on a GMC can easily cause body damage costing thousands of
dollars to repair.
If you read the recent series of articles Terry Skinner posted here, you
should have some idea of the sort of potential problems even an in-use GMC
can suffer; a long-parked one is much more potentially troublesome. Terry
has many years of experience as a mechanic, many of them working on many
different GMC motorhomes; he was able, with some complications, to contend
with those problems. Are you as well equipped, physically, knowledge- and
skill-wise to do as well? If not, you very definitely need to have someone
accompany and assist you who is. Your health and well-being could well be
at risk in easily imagined situations.
You've been blessed with a generous share of luck and skills to have
survived what you did in the war -- I hope that will persist and make every
GMC endeavor a trouble-free and enjoyable one. 12 years of GMC ownership
experience argues that it won't happen. And remember that there will be a
LOT of work to do on ANY coach that's been parked for years.
Welcome to our community, Jesse, let us help you. But don't let the siren
call of that "cream puff" lure you into a hazardous situation. Nor involve
you in a series of projects which waste valuable life-seconds you could
spend enjoying a less trouble-prone coach.
Thank you for your contributions as a member of the "greatest generation".

I have one I bought from Darren Paget.
It's still in the box, never opened.
If anybody is interested, I'll open the box and check for a pile of tool
stuff or a pile of rust.

Since Darren Pagent made it of stainless and / or aluminum I don't think that you'll find any rust.
