I ordered a set of these from CARS.
http://www.oldbuickparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=5807
Supposed to be plug and play. I was going to ask first but I couldn't get into the site this AM and did a impulse buy online. Hope it was a good decision.

Hi John,

It would be a good idea to obtain or build a relay system to operate the
headlights.

John, you will like them. LMC Trucks, in Kansas, has the relay harness already made up for 30 bux. that's where I got my lights and relays.

Hi Marsh,

Is this because the xenon lamps draw more current?

Thanks,

Hi Jay,

Yes. I don't know the specs. on these lights, but high performance lights
typically draw more current, and it is common for them to be sold with a
relay setup.
Even standard lights could benefit from the higher voltage provided by a
direct connection with larger wire and relay switching, compared with the
longer smaller wire routing and ageing switch and connections etc.

I tried the xenon headlamps. Took the time to build a relay system to handle the current. I was quite disappointed in the light that they put out. I took them out and put in a set of Wagner Halogen's. Much better coverage, and brighter.
Just my experience with them...others may vary....

Me too, Larry. 100 watters work really good, I hear.

John,

They sure look like knock offs of Cibie E-codes.

The lens and reflector are still the game regardless of the lamp packed inside. Xenon is just a moderate upgrade of the quartz-iodine lamps that some of us have known and loved for so many years now.

I do suggest that you take the time some evening after they arrive to jury rig enough to compare them in the dark. They look like Cibie, but if they didn't get the pattern right - there is no fixing it now. You can actually pull out one headlight and use that plug to power one of the new bulbs, but the ring probably won't set down.

They will not be completely plug and play in the GMC because the headlight mount buckets were designed for the 6024 envelope and the lamp mount and rubber boot (if you look in the background of the picture you can see them) will probably require that you cut away some of the inside edge of the bucket - not a real tough job.

They don't say different, so they are undoubtedly the standard 55/60W bulb. There is a rub, the wire in the GMC in undersize even for standard bulbs.

BTDT I've done this upgrade to more than a few vehicles over the years. I still haven't built a new headlight harness for the coach, but there is time.

Larry,
I also have the Xenon headlamps and I completely agree with you. The
best part of that kit was the plug in harness with the two relays. I
plan on replacing the Xenon lamps with Halogen lights. While they
look pretty at night, they definitely don't have the candlepower for
night driving.

if you are going to all the trouble of xenon lighting and relays, why not just used an HID setup? ive been thinking of how I could fab up an HID setup that would mount in the stock location. these look like the ticket http://www.kbcarstuff.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=XD7%2DHID though these are pricy. HID IMHO is the only lighting upgrade worth all the extra truble...

There is an easy solution to this entire lighting problem: Don't drive at night.

granted its expensive, but its a DOT legal upgrade and its a real Xenon HID system, not the simulated bulbs that seem to be so popular but in reality are barely brighter then a stock sealed beam.

Also as far as HID's go $750 for a compleate conversion is not bad at all. I knew a guy who had to replace a unit on his C6 corvette after it sustained some front end damage! that unit was $1,600! the conversion kit sold on that site use oem HID components from Phillips...

I guess the reason I bought them is because they say you Don't need to upgrade the wiring or add relays. I'll have to eventually do some testing to see what the voltage drop is at the stock lamp as compared to these and see what the difference in current draw is. Coach is in storage and work is very busy so it will be a while. If there is a relay kit it shouldn't be too big a deal to install that. It's all about the time to do it now.

Anyone want to fess up and describe their experiences with some of the 7" round knock offs of the Cibie and Hella real thing?

The 100w H4 bulbs should help till I can afford to replace my windshield. LOL
