I have never owned a GMC motorhome but I badly want one and am searching for one in good shape, regardless of the age. I check ebay often, ebay lists two GMC's in California, both seem good. One is at a used car lot, the other is by an individual and he doesn't seem to care whether he sells it or not.

HELP: Can you tell me if any of the older GMC's had a rear queen size bed in back. All that I have been able to find have rear bath and twin beds amidship.

I have been looking too. All I can say is keep looking at all the sites you can. I use

http://www2.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi?cat=cprv&itm=gmc&loc=&fil=&ys=1974&ye=1978&ps=&pe=&pgs=200&submit=++++go+++ +

Also, do a google on GMC Motorhome floor plans and there are a couple of sites to help you figure out the various arrangements.

Good luck

J. Leon,

Other than "GMC", You do not say what you are looking for...

Are you looking for a "fixer-upper", "usable" or a "needs nothing"* coach? Makes a BIG difference.

Note: current prices on coaches, parts and labor make the "needs nothing" a better buy than they have been in years... but the asking prices are starting to inch back up.

Do you know what floorplan(s) you might be interested in? (I.E. what use(s) do you have in mind and what is important to you?)

I suggest that you visit a few coaches and talk with the owners before picking a coach. (The coaches you visit do not have to be for sale.) It will save you time and money in the long run. If there is a rally or other gathering close, (Tulsa Lunch Bunch?)

Look through the websites for the floorplan and models. This a good start: <http://www.bdub.net/publications/index.html>

Note that VERY few layouts/models have a bed larger than a "full" bed. The most common models have seats that fold out into a full bed in the rear. A common modification is replacing the seats with a permanent bed with storage underneath. I know you asked about a queen bed... With walls all the way around (almost) you have more usable room than a queen bed in a normal bedroom. You can lean against the wall and not fall out of bed!

Anyway, once you figure out what you are looking for, we can help you better. Travel if necessary to look at good coaches, but see if you can get someone to "pre-look" at coaches that are farther from you. This forum and the Black list are good ways to find "pre-lookers."

I use search tempest <http://www.searchtempest.com/> to create lists of GMC's and have posted them on this forum.

Good Luck in your search...

----
*There really isn't such thing as a "needs nothing" coach. But "currently being used" will be closer than ones in storage.

J. Leon,

Yes, GMC's had a rear bed, however, I am not sure it was Queen size. The bed
is the width of the coach and the sleeping position is from side to side.
That is your head is at one side (drivers side) of the bed and feet at the
other (passenger side) or vice versa. Therefore if the person sleeping
furthest back wanted to get out of bed they had to climb over the person
sleeping further forward.

Gene Fisher has a website that has ALL KINDS of info on it regarding the
purchase of a GMC.

Here's a links that will take you to the area in the website where it is
discussed:

I would not recommend buying a fixer-upper hoping that you'll get a good deal, or get into one cheaper than you might otherwise. Get one that is being driven regularly and go from there. You might as well get some use out of someone elses' investment, because you'll likely never get the money out of a basket case.

Buying a show piece is no great deal either, since the folks who sunk so much of their money and emotional investment in it, that they ask more than it's reasonably worth.

Try to find a balance.

My 78' Royale did *not* have a queen bed in it,so I made one. The side "drybath" Royale's had a bath and closet that were moved somewhat forward of a lot of the other models, which allowed me to build the queen. FWIW, see this:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showgallery.php?cat=3823

Used a 5" Firm Mattress topper from JC Penny. Sleeps better than our bed at home.

As an added note...we sleep sidways in this configuration. If you ran all of the way to the back wall, and took a King mattress...shortened it to fit front to back, and provided you are 5'10" or shorter, you could sleep King. I may actually do this yet. Wife has trouble sometimes climbing over me if she needs to get up in middle of the night...even though I consider it a bit of fun...heh...heh...heh

Leon,

If you look at the brochures of the GMC's you will find that the rear beds
are described as Double Beds NOT Queen.

According to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bed_size

A Full / Double bed measures 54 inches by 75 inches long.

A Queen Size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.

I have done some research for you and it appears that the dimensions of the
rear bed in a GMC is 50 inches (front to back) by 85 inches (side to side).

Finding one with a Queensize bed in the back means that the closets and
bathroom would have had to been moved forward 10 inches.

Having said that you could get a rear twin model such as a Royal, Edgemonte,
Avion, etc. and remove the "dresser" in between the beds and make a platform
to go in between the rear twins and you'd wind up with a bed that was the
full width of the interior (85 inches side to side) and 75 (Avion & Royal)
to 77 inches (Edgemonte) front to back.

What a great idea! Also, they have a sale on now. I went to this page:
http://www4.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?GrpTyp=STY&ItemID=184134e&Ntt=mattress+topper&hdnOnGo=true&Ne=4+6+1031+8+18+904+949+833&submi t%20search.y=0&SearchString=mattress+topper&submit%20search.x=0&N=4294959029&Nao=0&SO=0&PSO=0&CmCatId=searchresults

and selected a queen one (I plan to trim it for width). Put "4SPRING" in the checkout coupon code,
and you can get it for about $77 plus tax/handling. Full size is cheaper.
They have a good return policy, so it's easy to take back if I don't like it. Can always add
another/different topper to it too...

thanks!

Karen
