G'day,

Has anyone ever seen or heard about a standard OEM propane cylinder in a GMC
that has caught fire or blown up?

I am not interested in anecdotal information regarding any other type of
propane bottles connected to a BBQ or some other type of cooking equipment
or installed in any other type of motor vehicle, trailer, whatever.

Thanks,
Rob Mueller

Jim Bounds has a picture of a completely burned GMC on his webpage. It's in the section advertising fire extinguishers. I would be curious to know what happened to the propane system in that coach. That being said, I can't imagine a scenario like the one with my parents travel trailer that would cause a well-functioning, non-leaking OEM system to explode. Me calling propane a bomb was me just being a smart mouth since I no longer have it in my coach...

Does the GMC propane tank have a relief valve? If so, it should not blow up. It can burn and the relief valve will let the expanded propane out, which will burn.

My 1974 26' Sequoia burned 6/1993. I had to walk 2 miles to a phone.
Upon my return, the coach was a frame. There was no trace of the
propane bottle. Picture is on the GMCPC.ORG web site under Shadetree
in my third fuel tank article.

I was at a US Grand Prix at Watkins Glen NY several years ago.
They had a "mud bowl" where several (drunken) people would try to
drive cars, pickups and motorcycles thru the mud.
It was at night and there were large bonfires around. Someone threw a
propane tank into a fire and I expected it to blow like a bomb. But
when it heated up the pressure valve opened and a propane flume burned
up about ten feet and as the pressure was released the valve shut off
for a while until it heated up some more and the valve reopened. This
occurred several times until all the propane burned up

There was no explosion

I had the same thing happen to me with a portable bottle. The
rosewood plug went and it looked like an afterburner. I'm not sure it
is possible to blow one of those things up. When I was a Sheriff in
San Diego I worked the Willows fire. Many homes burned to the ground
but those propane bottles didn't go. The plugs melt and they just
turn into a long burning torch. Saw some 1-2-300 gallon ones that
didn't blow also. Right next to one was a tractor melted in half.
