FINALLY! My son and grandson came today and helped me boost the Cad into
its nest. It's not bedded down yet (rear mount not bolted on), nor laying
eggs, but it's in there!
Tomorrow should see most of the mechanical and electrical completed before
we have to knock off for my mother's 93rd birthday party in the evening.
Plumbing, fluids top-off, and pre-oiling should come on Sunday.
With any luck at all, I'll finish up the exhaust system on Monday and be
ready for engine start on Tuesday.
That'll leave 5 whole days to test the installation, clean up all the mess,
service and load the coach, and be ready to leave on the 14th for
Montgomery. No sweat, huh? :-)
RIGHT! :-(

Fred,
We did miss having you, but I probably couldn't have "supervised" more than
one of you at a time. :-)
My son & grandson were here yesterday afternoon and until we broke for the
birthday party at 5 PM today. We all had some idle time while figuring out
what to do next & how we could all work in the same spot.
Most of the mechanical and plumbing tasks were completed today. The
electrical will be mostly "plug 'n' play" so I should be able to finish that
tomorrow. The one plumbing task I'm going to delay until Monday is the
upper radiator hose. I'm now planning to route a metal extension from the
thermostat housing around the rear of the air conditioning compressor to
mate up with the top radiator hose -- possibly even the one from the 455.
That will require some 1-1/2" tube bending; or, welding or brazing sections
together. That will require equipment and skills I don't have.
The new motor mount worked out perfectly except that the engine appears to
be shifted to port about 1/4"; that can be corrected quite easily.
I think the Cad has easier service access than the 455 had; the right head
is quite a bit farther forward, helping to clear the congested area I have
at the right rear where all my EFI wiring converges. The underside is
cleaner because of the iron manifolds instead of headers (having no exhaust
pipes (yet) helps some too).
My grandson was prepping the AC #4 Rapid Fire plugs for installation and
noticed a strange phenomenon: Two of the 6 plugs from the box. all marked
on the plugs as AC 4, had significantly different center electrodes -- more
pointed. I exchanged them at AZ for more like the other 6. I have no idea
why identically marked plugs would be of different construction, but those
were.
Just a few more days until fire off. Keep on sending that luck this way!
:-)

Ken,
Get some 1 1/2" copper fitting and pipe at your hardware store and solder it
together. Done it many times when working on street rods cooling.

J.R.,
I'm planning to visit my friend the plumber Monday morning, but I doubt they
use anything but PVC or CPVC these days.
Chuck,
Then I'm going to my friend's muffler shop, but I'm not sure they use any
pipe as small as 1-1/2", nor whether they can make a bend as tight as I need
to keep the rise down above the thermostat housing.
Something will work though! :-)

Ken: The muffler shop actually welded elbows together for me as I needed 3" and a tight S. He did it in stainless. As for the plumber, I have used CPVC on the newer big trucks with good results. I had a plastic tanked radiator on a Peterbilt that the inlet broke and I used PCVC glue and a coupler to repair. It was still holding 4 years later when I traded it.

Larry,
I've had and been referring to your writeup and photos. With my fiberglass
fan shroud, routing over the top of it is not so simple -- I could do it,
but I want to try something different. With the little Sanden clone A/C
compressor mounted up top, I think I can pretty easily create a metal tube
around to the port side. If I find the right fittings. I could even use the
original upper hose to connect to the I know I could if I had more time,
but may have do something else for expediency.

Jim,
I wish now that I'd ordered the Mr. Gasket hoses when you first posted the
link. But now I don't have time for any ordering or shipping. What I can
cobble together over the next couple of days will have to do for now. Same
for your exhaust pipes: Thanks for the offer, but I'll have them installed
& hot before we could get yours here -- I hope. :-) I've got a short
section of SS flexible exhaust pipe that I'll use as a pattern to take to
the tailpipe bender; hopefully that will make the task pretty simple -- and
quick. :-)
