The electric temp gauge is reading 40 degrees too hot. Anyone ever had a problem like that? This is an aftermarket that I installed a couple of weeks back after my old manual after market one bit the dust. I have it in the aluminum intake. That should not bother it any, should it.

Dan,
Check your ground. I had the same problem when we went to Santa Rosa and it turned out to be a bad ground.

I just now picked up another gauge, identical to this one. Will first try grounding the sending unit to the heads. I have alum intake. It that does not work I will pull sender and replace with new one in this package. If that does not work I will replace the unit in dash. I have gotten fast at tearing out my dash lately.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I can compensate for a little in my head but not 40 degrees.

Hi Dan, maybe try grounding somewhere beside motor first. Do you have engine grounded to frame? Just a thought..

WD0AFQ wrote on Fri, 05 March 2010 23:49 | Chuck, that might be it. I have been having trouble keeping my Digipanel operating. Had to ground the case of it to the bolt on the steering column. Something going on. I will check that in the morning.

No on the e-mail? I ran a secondary ground circuit on the Crestmont. I went from the ground on the engine battery to the dash, battery to engine block. Don`t know what size, about the size of a pencil. my dash Lights don`t flicker no more.

Dan, You did not sit in or fell asleep in my grounding seminar in Elkhart.
The engine is the master ground for every accessory (including the engine battery) forward of the steps in the GMC. Do not hook the digi-panel or anything else associated with the engine to the body or frame ground.
The OEM ground wiring for the instrument panel was a wire (probably 12 gauge) from the instrument panel to the front aluminum plate that has the boost solenoid and isolator mounted on it. Then there is a second wire from the aluminum plate run direct to the battery.
I strongly suggest you remove that wire from the steering column and attach it to the front aluminum plate, or the battery negative terminal, or the engine block.
I'm now wondering if they forgot to attach the engine to frame braided strap when they reinstalled the trans and engine in Kalifornia. There should be a braided strap between the rear of the trans attaching it to the frame. If it is missing then probably the ground current that should be running across that strap is running through your instrument panel instead.
Give me a call if you want to talk about it.

The ground strap to the frame is a secondary problem. Your primary problem is the dash being grounded to the steering column. The steering column is in turn grounded to the frame. I am not positive this is your gauge problem but the last digi-panel I fixed for someone was caused by just this same scenario.
Move the wire that is grounding the dash to either the aluminum plate up front, the negative post of the battery, or the engine. If you use the aluminum plate, which is where it belongs, also verify that there is a 12 ga. wire from the battery to the aluminum plate.
OK, now on the grounding strap to the back of the trans. If it is missing, I suspect that one end is probably still attached. There would have been no reason to disconnect both ends when removing the trans. If it is really missing, then I would make up a new piece of strap from some braided material and a couple of wire lugs. 8" long ought to do. Mount it with star washers between the lugs and the metal you are attaching it to. If you can not find braided material than cut a 1 foot piece of good 99% shield RG-8 and use the shield from it.
If you strike out finding the above, use a piece of 12 gauge house wire temporarily. I'll go down in my basement, make you a new one, and mail it to you.
Let me know what you find.

Ken, I had on a white t-shirt so I have not crawled under the coach yet. Did run a ground from battery to alum dash.
Also replaced the temp sender as the other one must have been bad. This one reads ok. I also got the digipanel fixed. The ground wire was not hooked to the engine. Put it back on the alt. and all is good again.
I am sure the ground strap was hooked back up to tranny but I will check it when I have on a dirty shirt. Teri wanted to go geocaching this afternoon so we took the 6 yr old grandson and hit the Gila River.
