Cold-climate start procedure for carbureted engines
addressed below. Many RV owners in South Central Alaska do
this:

1. Winterize (01-15September)

After engine/genset oil change, fill fuel tanks. Add
"Heet" (or equal) to make any water in tanks miscible with
fuel.
Drain all domestic water systems, including water
heater.
Using wet/dry shop vacuum cleaner, evacuate all water
lines, P-traps, etc. (eliminates need to use RV anti-freeze)
Start gen set and run "dry" of fuel (disconnect power
to fuel system). Disconnect 120V gen supply to living
quarters.
Store motorhome under-roof or uncovered (note: if
using custom cover or tarpaulins, tie securely to avoid
wind-shredding)
Disconnect positive terminal of batteries (must be
fully charged before disconnecting to prevent freezing). No
need to remove batteries.

2. DO NOT start/run during storage ('causes substantially
more engine wear than one cold start coming out of
"hibernation")

3. About mid-May, "wake-up" time:

A. If covered, remove covers.
B. Connect batteries.
C. Start genset
Motor gen set with starter motor for 15 seconds (to
pre-lube).
Connect power to genset fuel system.
Remove genset carb air cleaner.
Spray starting fluid into carb venturi (be sure
choke is in proper position afterwards)
Replace air cleaner immediately.
Start engine immediately (use local start switch).
Usually starts on first attempt.
After 5 minutes, connect 120V to living quarters.
Leave running until after motorhome engine is started.
D. Start motorhome engine:
Motor engine with starter motor for 15 seconds (to
pre-lube).
Remove air cleaner.
Spray starting fluid into carb venturi (be sure
choke is in proper position afterwards).
Replace air cleaner immediately.
Start engine immediately. Usually starts on first
attempt.
As soon as engine "levels out", set park brake,
engage transmission and run at 12-1500 RPM until engine
thermostat opens.
Prep living quarters for summer use.

'Have used this procedure since 1978 for my motorhomes (all
carbureted) in Alaska with no adverse effects on engines.
