Well, I got my new roof vents installed, but I'm not comfortable with the result. I'm really not sure what I'm doing here, so I hope everyone can have patience with what are probably pitiful newbie attempts to do this job.
Here's the stuff I sealed it with. It's "butyl," and I believe it does not harden. It's what the kit had at my local RV supply store.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32538&title=p2260029&cat=5390
I used SS screws and washers, and just put a layer of the stuff (is this what I've heard called "dum dum" tape?) under the seal edge, then tightened until it started to squeeze out, then pressed it back in to make a more rounded edge.
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32537&title=p2220031&cat=5390
These vents have been repositioned at least twice, so there were extra holes underneath. I replaced 3 vents altogether, and on the last one I filled the un-used holes with silicone sealant. Was that a good thing to do or unnecessary? I read somewhere on the net someone saying to never use silicone, but I don't remember the context or reason.
Thanks for your help

Jay,
Butyl tape is fine althought next time you might use a scotchbrite pad to
lightly scuff the surface. Sometimes the oxidization from the paint does not
allow the tape to seal well. Wipe some small balls of tape ito the screw
holes after you have driven the screws as well.

I have done what you did with good success. But if you want to go another step. Get some self leveling sealant and seal over the edge of the vents. You could do the screw heads as well but it will be more work if you need to remove the vents in the future. The self leveling sealant is used alot on rv roofs. You have to be careful how much you use because as the name implies, it will flow somewhat. I chose not to do that to my plumbing vents because they are visable from the ground and the flow of that sealant does not look the best. But I did do all the other vents, antennas and such. The sealant is removeable without much work because it stays flexible. It is available at rv stores. Make sure you do NOT get the kind that is used with rubber membrane roofs. I use DYCO C-10 Flow Seal. It is an off white color. The tube states "DYCO C-10 Flow Sealant is formulated with Dupont Hypalon which forms a tough, flexible,
synthetic rubber seal." Never use silicone anywhere on the coach. It can't be painted and is a bugger to get off. The few holes that you filled are under the vent so that is ok but use something else in the future.
Another good product is Euroseal Gel joint sealer. It dries clear, is flexible and paintable. It is used for finer detail work that may be more visable. It is sold by Wurth USA Inc. I think I got mine from Jim Bounds.

Rick,
Thanks so much for the detailed reply. You answered another question I had, which was whether it was advisable to put any kind of sealant on top of the always-flexible butyl. Sounds like the self-leveling stuff would work OK for that.
Thanks again.

Jay..
The only thing you might do differently is to tighten the screws a bit more.. If as you say the vents seem to move they aren't tight enough.. Just remove the excess.. The butyl is mailable enough that it will just form a "gasket" like form. Covering the screws is just icing..

Don't feel uncomfortable here with what you do.. You should see some of the stuff most of the rest of us do.. Well there are some who are "Perfect"!
now a P.O.

Many thanks to Steve and Ron and Dan and Gary and the others who responded. I'm feeling reassured. :-)
