G’day,

Gary asked this question but I figured I’d start a new message so we can
find it easily.

I have rotated my tires twice so far and since they are radial I keep them
on the same side.

Front to the rear

Middle to the front

Rear to the middle

I did it at the end of each tour in the USA which is about 4000 miles.

I've read that you can rotate them to the other side, but they take a while to get seated.

Regarding "rotating" radial tires, there are at least 2 schools of thought. 1 is that the rotating direction of the tire should not be chaged, This would mean if you moved a tire from one side to the other, the tire would have to be "flipped" The other "school" says don't worry about rotation direction. If some-one wants more info, ask and I'll ask my "tire technician" son.

In 1968 I put a set of then new to the US Michelin X tires on my car. A
year later I rotated them in the then-popular X pattern. Almost
immediately, the tires whose direction of rotation changed were unbalanced.
When I took them to one of the large tire chains in LA, they told me the
theory was that the radial sidewalls would "lean back" during use because of
their flexibility and the pliability of the rubber. When the direction of
rotation changed, the plies deform again to "lean back" in the opposite
direction. But, to reach the new stable condition, the cords passed through
the perfectly radial position where they developed a wrinkle and an un-round
condition -- not necessarily unbalanced.

I continued to drive the reversed tires for a while and they did indeed
improve.

I've been told that more modern radial plies are less prone to "leaning
back". I prefer to not risk fate.

I also have inquired about the rotation of radials and was pretty much
told the same thing Ken. The older radials did want to be kept
rotating in the same direction but not the new ones. Doesn't matter,I
still keep them on the same side.
