I know that there are many different views about which tires are best for our GMC's and I do not want to create a contest.
I need new tires, existing are like brand new, less than 2000 miles, no cracks or evident damage and the coach was kept inside except for the last year, however the date on the tires is April 2001.
I would like to get the quietest tire possible and have looked at the Goodyear Assurance but it is not avail in the 225 R75 size but it is avail in 225 R70. Would the wider tire have a negative impact on our Coach?
I do want a Rag Walled tire.
What other brand of tires would you folks promote?

Hi,
Depending on your wheel size you can't go wrong with BFG Commercial T/A's.
Not real pricey, good traction and I think pretty quiet. Steve F.down in
Sierra Vista turned me on to them and I know he has done lots of tire
research on GMCs.
Thanks

How about Kumhos? I want a tire that I won't shed a tear about getting rid of in 6 years, but also won't shed the tread on me before that.

Richard, from your original question, a 225 75 and a 225 70 "should be the same width. The 70 would be "shorter" if that tire is actually available as an LT Load Range D (for 23 footers maybe)or load range D, it might be an easy way to help with the 3.07/1 final drive ratio if that's what you still have. Of course it will make the whole coach lower and if you only put them on the front, the caster would go the wrong way from what seems to be needed for good handling.

Richard,
Following Ken Burton's suggestion I got Kumho Road Venture (Korea) AT KL78
LT225/75R 16/E1 115Q.
They have been on the coach since February of 2008 and have done about 8000
miles.
Here's some other tires that I found "back then."
1) Goodyear Wrangler (USA) AT/D2 LT225/75R 16E
2) Uniroyal Liberator (USA) A/T LT225/75R 16E
3) Cooper Discoverer AST 225/75 ZR16 115Q
4) Runway Enduro (China) H/T 225/75 R16 115/112R 10PR SBL
5) B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/ A All Season LT225/75R16 Load Range E
6) Cooper SMR II LT225/75R16 Load Range E
7) Michelin LTX M&S LT225/75/16 LRE
8) Dunlop Radial Rover A/T
9) B.F. Goodrich Commercial T/A

Richard, more info, after looking up Assurance on Goodyear's site, it appears the Assurance is a Passenger CAR tire and it is NOT an LT tire so it would not be suitable for a GMC MH(If what I see on the web is correct)

I also have them only mine are 2 years older that Rob's. They were highly rated by users in the Tire Rack feedback from customers. They were the highest rated tire in our size. The KL78 had great traction. Yes, they are soft but who wears out a motorhome tire. I'll run the 10 years, which is the Michelin recommendation, and if they wear out sooner, which I doubt, then I'll replace them.
The KL78 is an off-on road tire. When I ask Lauire says they whine slightly at 65. So if you are getting Kuhmos and you want absolute quiet, you might want to look at their all season KL51 instead instead of the KL78. My neighbor has the KL51s on his delivery trucks. One has 80,000 on them so far.
At 1/2 the price of Michelin you can not go wrong with Kuhmo KL78s or KL51s. I just checked and the Obamatire tax has kicked in on them yet but......

Ken,
I specifically picked the AT tread for better off road traction and so far
no traction problems. Neither Helen nor I can hear them over the wind noise
at highway speeds Double Trouble.
As mentioned I've got about 8,000 miles on them and they still look like
brand new. I rotate them at the end of each season. Fronts go to the rear,
rear go to the middle, middle go to the front.
Thanks for posting the Tire Rack search, much better than the list I
provided!
CAUTION: If you decide to order a set of these MAKE SURE you order the RIGHT
LOAD RANGE! They sell the KL 78 and KL 51 in both the D and E load range.
The E range costs a bit more than the D range. This has already happened to
someone on the GMCnet; they ordered the wrong ones but was able to change
his order.
That brings up a question; do "we" think that Kuhmo really makes two
different tires or it's the same tire (E load range) "de-rated" so people
who don't understand the Load Range system and insist on load range "D" will
buy them?

I do not know. I looked up the specs and they both weight 38 pounds each. Obviously they had to be made in different runs because the outside letter molding is different (D vs E). They are only $6.00 difference in price so why not just buy the the Es and be done with it.
One of these days I'll have to kick the coach into neutral at 60 and ask Laurie if she still can hear them. She may not be hearing the tires. I know I can not hear them. Some of the reviewers say they are the quietest AT tires that they have ever used.

Ken,
I agree with you 100% vis-ą-vis buying the E's. My main point in mentioning
is to make sure somebody else didn't make a mistake trying to save $36 or
$42!
For the hell of it I might try and contact Kuhmo and ask them if / what the
difference is. The fact that they both weigh 38 pounds sure makes me think
they're the same tire structurally with different markings.
The only down side I noted is that mine are not made in Korea they're made
in China, how about yours?

The BFG Commercial T/A is the quietest tire I've ever owned. I liked
'em so much, I also put them on my 3/4 ton silverado. I think Chuck
Botts is on his 3rd set now, he also prefers them.

Thanks so much for all of your thoughts.
Ken, you mentioned that you would run them 10 years. I was led to believe that 6 years was the time to replace. That is why I am looking at replacing mine now, they are 9 years old.
My current tires are Bridgestone V Steel. My wheels are Alcoa and like I mentioned earlier, they look like new.
The Goodyear Assurance is, as pointed out not a LT, thanks for that advice.

Richard
The 225 75 and the 225 70 are the same width, the 70 being slightly shorter.
According to Discount Tire's calculator the revolutions per mile are 688 and 710. The 710 actually being closer to the original, giving you ever so slightly more "pep" but you won't feel it.
Many tout the BFG as "the" tire for the GMC and I may choose them. But many others claim great ride and results with cheaper China or Korean tires.
Be sure they have sufficient load capability.
