I once was there and thought about the possibility but poor weather helped me decide against it. Driving up pp is kind of what I would think of as a small adventure. I don't know if it is blacktopped yet.

I have driven my GMC up Trail Ridge Road but never up Pikes Peak. They are similar altitudes at the top but the Pike Peak Road is not as good as Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park.

G'day,

I drove my Dad's VW campervan up there MANY years ago. While I was parking I
noticed another car cranking and cranking and cranking. I decided it might
be a good idea to park it with the front end facing down hill so when it
wouldn't start I could just let it start rolling and pop the clutch. Good
thing I did! ;-)

Don't know if I would want to do that with a GMC that DID NOT have a vacuum
assist pump that worked hooked to the brake booster as you wouldn't have
brakes!

Come to think of it I think this comes under "discretion is the better part
of valor."

If you have any other options, I just can't see why anyone would even
want to drive a motorhome to the peak. I've done it in a car, on a
motorcycle, and on the cog railway. The only thing that wasn't
gasping for power at 11,000 feet was the cog railway.

Has anyone ever driven their GMC's up Pikes Peak?

Kind of. In 1977, my Dad attempted to drive our '76 Real-Lite Class C (Chevy chassis) up but didn't quite make it. The engine stalled several hundred feet from the top, so he just put on the brakes and waited for help. Since there was no shoulder to pull off on, my Mom, younger sister, and I freaked out as all we could see out the side dinette window was straight down a couple thousand feet. We thought we were going to meet our maker. Dad, on the other hand was cool as a cucumber and just laughed at us. The authorities showed up, hooked us to a chain, and pulled us up the rest of the way.

I lost my transmission on Pikes Peak...okay, it was in the parking lot for
the cog railroad... But it makes a good story! Spent a week in Aamco while
they put in my Danny Dunn transmission....no regrets.
