At first McDonalds was using AT&T. Then the got hooked up with another
provider (making two options is some McDs.) You had to have accounts with
either to use the wireless. The access was free, you just couldn't go
anywhere. Starbucks also charged for use but they did advertise having
wireless.
Finally, they gave up on the idea of little coffee shops and chain places
(like Panera) having free access and free use. Panera now, however, is
implementing a policy that they may ask you to leave unless you are really
eating and drinking something. Too many people having meetings at Panera and
not buying anything.
As of January, you can go to McDs for the meeting and not buy their stuff
saving Panera the problem of having to ask you to buy something or leave.
Someday we'll find out that all these gigahertz signals flying through the
air really do cause health problems. Then we won't be able to use the
internet, check our positions and prepare and send emails and do online
banking while driving our GMCs.

Few years ago before I started working on computer, One of our
customers thanked me for having the WIFI for them to use while they
camped on our lot.
After the customer left, I asked our office person what they were
thanking me about.
3 1/2 years later, I know little bit more. I use the lap top as my
sole source so when I'm traveling I need the WIFI service to sort out
the numerous E mails I need to address.

After using Dan's Verizon Internet at Quartzsite I can tell you that it is more than adequate for most users. The fee is OK if you are on the road more than a few months per year. Where we were at Quartzsite (6 miles south of town out in the desert) there was no chance of ever finding any WiFi, so Dan's Internet was a real lifesaver for access.
While I was there I had a 74 meg. file that I wanted to download. I did not use Dan's access to download it because I knew he had a monthly limit. I do not know what that limit is. I waited until the next time I was in town and used of some towing business's internet instead. I did try the McDonalds in Quartzsite but could not see it from the parking lot if they had it.
Now if you could get Verizon at $20.00 per month I might subscribe.
I'll tell you who needs free WiFi. That is camp Walmart. Every time I stay at one I have to get out my long distance WiFi antenna if I want access. I was at one in Tyler, Texas pulling a signal from a couple of blocks away and some SOB pulled in next to me and blocked my signal. I had to go and ask him to move which he did.

Walmart runs their cash registers over 802.11. As little as three years ago
and depending on who set it up, the wireless at Walmart could have been open
(and insecure for credit card use) or it could have been closed, encrypted
and password protected. In the last three years they've gone from "stupid"
to "smart" in setting up their internal networks.
As to inexpensive internet my wife and I decided to start using Virgin
Mobile's pay as you go plan. It piggybacks off of Sprint. They have plans
from $10 to $30 based on transfers. When you run out of use, plop down more
money. The USB dongle works with Macs and PeeCees. Performance is good.

Ken: The users of Verizon's air card who got it prior to April 2008 (like Dan, and me) have no monthly limit. The newer ones have a 5 gb per month limit. The closest I ever got to that was 4.2 gb last December when I was doing a lot of upgrades on my software for some equipment, so even a 5 gb would work for me. But, probably if you wanted to download movies you would go over that limit.
I have been very happy with my Verizon air card service, and very rarely have had any access issues, even in remote parts of rural Montana. The only place I stayed and could not get service was in a motel in Green River Utah. Things should be even better with my new Wilson Trucker cell antenna that Dan got for me.
It is also unfortunate that it does not work at my home in Idaho, which is very remote, and is not covered by any cell service at all, from any provider. I have to use Wild Blue Satellite for net access there.
BTW, I seldom use wi fi access away from home, due to the limited security of most accessable systems. With the Verizon system, I know I am secure.
Just more information to keep everyone informed.

All those points are very valid points. The problem I had with other cell providers was their lack of coverage area for voice and even poorer coverage for data. I do not visit high population areas very often so most of cell providers other than Verizon are questionable for me.
I did a 9 month study for a client with around 10,000 mobile employees. I had the contract for the center of the country which had around 3700 employee users. I also had more rural geography than the concurrent East and West studies covered. Since the company was paying the cell bills I had total access to their billing and calling statistics. We loaded some special code into the users phones to accumulate incomplete (no signal) and dropped calls. Once a month we pulled the stats from each phone and crunched that data along with the billing data. Some phone stat had to be pulled more frequently due to the numbre of records stored.
We could tell from the cell tower numbers (stored by the special code we installed) where the calls originated from. What we could not gather is where the "no service" calls originated from. We tried to get that code to record a "no service" record along with the last tower seen and time. Then a second record record followed with the next time service was available again with the tower and time. That code never worked properly because in some cases of poor service we could use all available storage in a day. We tried several different approaches but were never able to gather enough reliable data with the limited processing power and storage available at the time. The problem was primarily with one provider so we knew what was going on. Poor service coverage led to a high number of records. We were never able to collect enough reliable data to prove by the numbers what was going on.
The conclusion of the study in the end was:
1. In major metropolitan areas almost any provider will work.
2. Along Interstates outside of town and in smaller cities any of the major providers will work.
3. Off-interstate and outside of town, Verizon was #1 followed by Cingular/ATT.
Prior to the study the client had intended to move all of their cell users to one provider when we were done. For internal political reasons they split their users and put their metropolitan users on ATT/Cingular. If a metropolitan user complained for poor service they were allowed to switch from ATT to Verizon.
In the trade rags I get, the latest analysis of traffic loads, about 3 months ago, said ATT is is over subscribed on the data side and it is taxing their ability to provide good data service in some areas. Verizon was rated as adequate all across the US and Sprint was an "also ran" with not enough data coverage to get a good sample.
Cell service is constantly changing with mergers, re-branding, sharing agreements, etc. The technology advances about every 3 years as does user applications. So what it true today may not be the same next year.

You read the same report I did. Neither AT&T nor Apple predicted the iPhone
would be so successful and cripple the network. Blackberry users pass a lot
less data around. There's a reason for that. Probably and app for that, too.

I need one of those antennas Ken. When i was on the road, the walmart parking lots NEVER have a mcdonalds, panera, atlanta bread company or other free internet. So you have to park in one parking lot for email, then move to walmart for the night.

Yes on that location I was latched on to a closed coffee shop across the street and down about a block. I was talking on Skype when he pulled in and killed my call at about 10 PM.
The antenna I use is a 15 or 16 db plastic encased yagi. It is a commercial version that came to me for free from a friend who has a large electronic surplus business. I got 4 of them at the time. I use one in the coach, one permanently installed on a hanger pulling about 3/4 mile, and 2 in the kit I have for providing WiFi at GMC rallies.
Dan had a recommendation on a good, fairly inexpensive directional WiFi antenna. Maybe he will hop in here with it.

One other hint. Every Best Buy I have checked has their encryption turned off. Just park near the front door.
