Many of you know that my wife and I are searching for that just right GMC coach. Reading through the Black List and elsewhere I see a number of references to "have bearing tool". What is this mysterious tool and why is it so important? Back in the old days before hubs it was common practice to repack the front wheel bearings and occassionally replace them. Does the GMC require a special tool to seat the bearings in the race? I also see references to what I think amounts to a bearing buddy approach to repack the bearings without pulling the whole assy. Inquiring minds want to know, what is so special about the GMC bearings?

Thanks

Wayne and Lisa,

You might find some good reading here on Gene's site <http://gmcmotorhome.info/front.html#ZERK>

The bearings are different than most and the bearing tool(s) allow servicing the bearings without ruining them. I can't share my bearing tool - it's my checkbook! I had my bearings serviced when the coach was in Ohio with Tom Hampton.

I'm looking forward to the responses you will get on this subject. Although I have some understanding of this, my memory is in need of refreshing..

There are many pullers , but this set up is different enough to where
you'll need this particular design to do it effectively.
Having the tool is only half the job. Having the correct clearance is
very important.
You might go to our You Tube under Applied GMC and watch how it is done.

Wayne,

A picture is worth a thousand words, wonder how much a YouTube video is
worth?

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9107037595711370681#

If you watch this you will understand what the tool is and how to replace
the bearings in a GMC.

Here's a link to a cross section of the GMC knuckle and bearing:

I have been looking to add an engine and transmission cooler. Is a remote oil thermostats a good idea to regulate the temperature. What size coolers are generally used. On my last trip I noticed the oil pressure would go down when I had short stops at rest areas then after a while go back up. It was never below 40 psi. I thought I could use more oil cooling so I am getting ready to add a oil cooler for both the transmission.

Charles,

Members of the GMC Tidewater Crabs are fortunate in that one of our members has offered the loan of his Front Wheel Bearing Tool Set that was made by Ken Thoma to members of the club. Along with the tape and written instructions.

you almost cannot get too much cooling on our trannys.

http://gmcmotorhome.info/CRANKS.html#COOLER

they make heat all of the time

thermostats almost always fail closed which will toast the tranny. so buy
a big cooler and just use it.
