Gary is in Maxwell.

He is going to drive up to my place
(in Chico) in the morning.

We will have a look-see.

How do we test for a failed rubber brake line?

Yep, I told Gene that I was in Williams, but I'm really in the Maxwell
Rest Area. When I pulled in for gas at the Pilot station at Dunnigan,
my brakes appeared to be growling. When I pulled into the rest area,
they growled at me again. So, I'm looking for a place where I can pull
my wheels and brake drums off to see what's going on. I had replaced
all of the pads about 20k miles ago, but something has worn out. I
just got a call from Rich Castleberry in Chico. He has a shop that I
can get to in the morning. About 60 miles away. I'll see what's up in
the morning.

Are you sure it isn't that dog growling. I'd have taken him home with me from Quartzsite if I thought I could have got away with it. The heck with the coach. Neat dog.

Good luck with the coach. Is it a front or rear brake making the noise?

Gary said he wasn't sure if the problem noise
if from the front or rear.

Any ideas?

We'll jack it up and pull the wheels
and have a look in the morning.

Actually, I'm confused. As I pulled into the Pilot Fuel stop, the
growling sounded and felt like it came from the passenger rear side.
However, when I pulled into the rest area, it sounded and felt like it
came from the passenger front side.. That's why I can't say for sure
where the growling is coming from. It's going to be interesting to
find out.

Where was the dog at the time of both stops? Did he move from the rear to the front. I'm thinking the growling might be from PoohBear. Maybe he was thinking about Curtis's cat.

Let us know what you find. I'm sure PoohBear will help find the problem.

Gary, check your calipers to make sure they are not loose. I had the same thing. Sounded like it was behind the door. Actually my right brake caliper, front, had jumped completely off. The guy in Illinpois forgot to tighten up several things.

I'll cast a vote for a rear wheel bearing. The damn sound will
travel up
the frame rails and sound like it's right under you. Get the dog
to go
listen in the closet and bathroom. (Tongue firmly in cheek)

If it does turn out to be one of the bearings
is that a Napa, or local part?

Guess we should do both sides (all four?) if one
is found to be bad, correct?

Richard and others,

First of all anything in this email should not be taken personally. I see a
lot of request for part numbers of parts that fit the coach. And that fine
but this tells me that a lot of you are not members of GMC Motorhomes
International. I ask why not! The Parts Interchange Index alone is worth
the price of admission. It was recently reorganized and updated with many
new parts numbers added and obsolete removed. It can also use your help to
added new part numbers that you may have found and help us delete the ones
that are no longer valid. You also get 4 newsletters a year and access to
all the past newsletters on line at the clubs website. If by chance you can
attend one of the two biannual club rallies the tech seminars and meeting
and making new GMC friends is priceless.

I know some that out there in GMC land are not joiners but you miss out
meeting regional and national friends. Just ask Jim K, Jim B, Dan and many
others here on the GMC Net.

You will find that the pricing from NAPA is MORE than the price from Jim K

Can not argue with John. Sooner or later one of the International gatherings will be near you. Take a week off work and come. It is an experience of a lifetime. It is not for everyone but most of the GMC folks are pretty social and these gatherings are social and technical. One can pick and choose. I like the ice cream socials myself.
We have all of the parts interchange suppliments going back to the early years. The reason we bought this particular coach was the records and all of the interchange guides. They will stay with our coach when it goes to a new owner. Makes it more "reliable" looking to a new owner. Shows someone really cared for the machine.
The yearly dues are cheap. If you never go to a gathering the dues are very cheap for what you get. Don't forget, the Fall gathering is in Southern, Illinois.
Hope to see everyone in Montgomery. We should "roll" today.

When I pulled into the rest area, they growled at me again. So, I'm looking for a place where I can pull my wheels and brake drums off to see what's going on. While much to late for this problem, this time....

I normally do a walk around just after stopping at a rest stop. I check each hub for temperature with my hand. (Carefully, normally with the back side.) If any hub is hotter than the others, I suspect a problem with that wheel, brake or bearing. (Many use an IR gun, but I am cheap.)

My '78 has hub caps, but I would pull them if I suspected anything... like when hearing a growling noise.

I believe that if your going to learn about the GMC, get with it and
enroll in the International.
There are so many benifits that your $30 is worth it.
