Rusty,
Thanks that's a very nice slide show, especially from the NY Times who often aren't car buffs. I need to get down and see that display before it closes, I think it runs another couple of months yet.

And, that glass "sediment bowl" on the Olds Rocket V8 fuel pump would certainly come in handy today with all the Ethanol issues on our GMC's.

Don't travel to see this display in person. It closed 31 Jan.

As long time museum members, the show was kind of disappointing.
They let the NYT photographer much closer to the cars than even we (the docent-wife and I) were allowed. There were also little or no extended discussions about the power plants. Things like the Doble where all you get to see is the covered up boiler when the real technology that made this a 100MPH car was the double acting compound engine that was underneath. Or, the fact that the Summers brothers had to come up with a unique way to handle the lubrication of the four hemis in Golden Rod because there was not room for an oil pan under the engine and there was no point made that there were four of them, and two transmissions so it was a actually a dual drive train.

Many of the single display engines shown in the slide show are out there in the standing exhibit.

If you get to the Detroit area, the museum is worth a stop. So is Greenfield Village and I know where you can leave the coach.

Matt

If you look at pic #4 of the Olds engine, you will see the glass
sediment bowl some are talking about today. This type of bowl is
found at local Tractor Supply stores. My store has them on cards on
the back wall where tractor parts are located.

Graig,
Check with RACOR, they have a variety of different bowl type filters. I have an old one on a shelf somewhere, that was removed from a diesel car.

Matt,

Helen and I stopped by the HF museum this past summer. She visited
Greenfield Village, I did the museum.

It was not what I expected AT ALL! I figured it would be a display of Ford
products!

IT BLEW ME AWAY! It is way beyond that, it's hard to explain but suffice it
to say it's well worth visiting.

IMHO it's in the same league as GM's Parade of Progress displays that had
the Futurliners traveling around the country showing people "the future."

A couple of years ago we visited the Henry Ford & Greenfield Village. I figured we would spend the day then continue on with our trip. After spending the day visiting the museum, my wife insisted we come back the next day to see the rest. We both enjoyed the visit greatly. We also found a great place nearby to camp overnight in the GMC. Nearby is a train station & police station where they allow overnight parking. Across the street is the YMCA where you can shower, watch TV, etc. The trains were a little noisy but at no charge it was a great bargain.

Matt,
Thanks for straightening me out on calendars - - I'm terrible at making notes on those, I should see that before it closes stuff. Sounds like I didn't miss that much anyway. Looked like they had a cutaway of a "copper cooled" engine. That makes quite a chapter in Alfred Sloan's "My Years with General Motors" book. They have a complete one (but not cutaway) at the GM Heritage center in Sterling Heights that I saw.

Yes, I've seen the Racor units, and have been eyeing them. Probably more interested for my pontoon boat, than my GMC. Knock on wood, I haven't really had any ethanol problems with my GMC yet, but I know a lot of people do. As the young people say, their kind of "spendy" for me at the moment.
