At the top of my genset compartment opening is what appears to be a 2" valence made of wood. the ends extend beyond the compartment and I don't see what it attaches to. The generator (Kohler) is so tall that portions of it hit this piece taking it in and out. Once it's in, it has plenty of clearance.

Am I correct in assuming that this is not structural and that I can make a cut in it and install a hinge to get it out of the way when I need to. I'll post a picture if I can, but I wondered if anyone else has such a valence (or major structural beam, one or the other).

I have no idea (other than to make me wonder) why it's there.
