I need to add a washer or something to the entry door hinges to raise the door just slightly to mate it better with the lock. How do the pins come out of the hinge?

Thanks!!

Drew,

Unless the gap around the door is uneven, especially from to to bottom of
the latch side, the correct adjustment location is at the striker -- just
loosen the BIG Phillips screws and set the location.

If your door IS sagging, you need to get new pins and bushings from a parts
store's "Help" display -- most I've seen have them. There should not be
room between the hinge sections to insert shims or washers.

The pins can be driven out from the bottom with a pin punch, but you should
have a heavy bucking bar on top of the hinge (not the pin) to help absorb
the blows -- you'll need at least 3, maybe four hands. A long time back
someone described a puller (actually, a pusher) to remove the pins but I
don't recall who, when, nor a source.

Have not used it on a GMC, but pretty sure this one would work:

I theoretically have one of these in my garage somewhere that you could borrow, but I haven't seen it in about 8 years, so don't know if I can turn it up for sure. Let me know if I should start looking.

Well, it seems to me that there is a lot more "gap" on the top of the hinge than the bottom, and that the door could come up a little bit to center it in the frame better. There also does not seem to be any bushing left on the bottom of the top hinge at all. I will see if the pins will come out and go from there!

Thanks,

Drew

Drew

I had posted this back in 2001:

I had then found the GM part number for those hinges and put it into
the GMCMI parts interchange booklet. If you aren't a member later
don't have the booklet, let me know and I will look it up.
I think that you probably can still buy new hinges from GM.

The original bushings were plastic with a flange on one end,
which took care of the vertical thrust, as well as spacing the
hinge.
The replacement bushings are brass, still with a flange. Darcy
Moses used to sell the bushings and loan out the removal tool.
He built the tool and now he's gone. I've used it, but CRS keeps
me from remember what it looked like.
