I didn't realize IBM still had anything going on at RTP.

IBM tends to over react. Whenever I visited the IBM Boulder (CO) plant
they would evacuate the bldg every time a Chanute was expected. I imagine
the roof at RTP can't handle the potential snow load if it is wet.

At IBM Boca -ESD HQ at the time, they were worried about hurricanes
because the bldg was originally designed for IBM France which doesn't see
wind stress like Boca Raton (FL)

More than anyone wanted to know but once an IBMer always an IBMer. Same
with the Corp as I recall. Once a Marine Always a Marine!

No theose people at RTP just went nuts every time there was the slightest hint of snow around.

I went to a 1 week class one time at RTP and on Friday when we arrived for class there was no one around. We (the students) waited around and at about 11:00 someone finally showed up. We were told that the place was closed due to snow. We asked "what snow?". There was about 2" on the ground which we hardly even noticed on the way in that morning. Since it was the last day of class we were told that we had better head for the airport so we did not miss our 4:30 flight. 4:30 was five hours away. We went anyway and it took us a whole 35 minutes to get there. The roads were fine but there were dozens and dozens of cars sitting in the ditch along the way. I would hate to see what they would do if it really snowed.

Rick you are dealing with an amount similar to what I saw in Flagstaff a couple of weeks ago. They had 18" when I arrived and were forecast to get another 20" overnight. The state of Arizona had both of their snowplows out on I-40 so I got out of town before the additional 20 arrived.

Just leave it in place. Spring is coming soon.

Ken,

I have to agree with you on that one. Here in Virginia when it snows, my cars are parked way up at the end of the driveway (out of harms way). I learned to drive in snow, but the problem for me is those that don't know how to handle snow and ice. I have been RUN INTO three times by those can't handle the conditions.
People get weather forcasts days in advance but wait until it is snowing to jam the markets for milk, eggs and bread. I still don't understand why these people love to make French toast when it is snowing. 'must have missed that or the memo.
When I worked(?) for the gom'it, my boss knew that I'd get there when I got there (why expose yourself and your car for only a days pay). If they wanted me that bad they could dispatch a HUMMER, otherwise I stayed put. ....and now that I'm retired I'm getting too old to shovel snow..... and learning to make French toast.

Ken,

I experienced this first hand at Chapel Hill, NC. Coming from West Virginia where we didn't look at snow as a problem until it got up to the bumper, I drove down to UNC from our house north of Chapel Hill and there was maybe an inch and not more than 2 inches of snow. I got to a hill going up to the main street and it looked like a war zone. There were cars abandoned and parked all over the hill in all angles. I weaved my way past them and when I got to my office, no one was around any where. About 10 o'clock people started showing up. If the vehicle started spinning, you just turn off the engine, lock up and just walk off until the snow melts.

I reported to RTP for many years and had to fly in and out of there every month or so in my own plane. I never had any problem getting to RDU in the winter. My problem was always with the drivers on the road between RTP and the IBM sites I was visiting in the RTP area.

At the first sight of snow they all take off work. I always thought it was an excuse to take the day off and go skiing. one. When I was working in France I spent three days trying to contact someone in RTP on the phone. I finally sent an email complaint note to middle management and got a response that said to try next week as it had snowed in Raleigh.

If your Blazer can drive in 30 inches of unplowed snow, then I'm
impressed.

We've had quite a bit of snow here in Santa Fe this last week or so.

I am very impressed with my 1996 Geo Tracker automatic with 4 wheel
drive.
I tried to drive through 14" of heavy snow with my 1973 Jeep Grand
Cherokee but it got stuck in the drive.
I used the Geo to help pull it back about 50 feet so that I could get
the tracker into the driveway.

The Tracker then drove down the 300 foot driveway through all the
unplowed snow to the street.
It was able to drive back up the drive after returning fro town.

Neither car has snow tires. Just all weather tires.

I doubt that I could go through 30" of snow. Even the light fluffy stuff we got in the last storm. This is the same storm you are getting today. Last year I was able to plow through 24" though I did break my lower bumper cover doing it.

As of this morning my yard stick says we have 15" which is only 1/2 of what you have. By the time I got up, the county had already plowed the roads. Laurie went to the store and a few other places this morning. We are getting hit with lake effect snow not the that main storm has headed your way.

Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to go get on my John Deere and plow my 400 feet of driveway or just leave it in place for the spring thaw.

Good luck on your digging.

Ken,

You are right about the drivers in NC. Every time it rains you can find cars on the Interstate sitting in the medium where they slid off or even worse upside down. I never go out when snow or ice is on the road for my own protection. Stop signs and stop lights are ignored by some and if you are approaching one you will see people going through and wave a cheerful hand to you as they go in front of you.

Thanks. We did finally dig ourselves out of the 30 inches we got over
the weekend, and I was considering going out and blowing the six
inches or so we added today, but it's so windy I had the feeling that
I would be wasting my time. I'll do it tomorrow, and probably miss my
own going-away luncheon at the office. The boss will probably postpone
that for a later dinner.

What a week. The top of the snow in the driveway is about even with
the waistline trim on the GMC.

At least I am able to keep an Internet connection, and have been able
to get a lot of work done at home between diggings. Good thing,
too--this is my last chance to finish some stuff before I leave.

The guys on the news are advising people to get outside a little for
some fresh air, at the same time the weather service is warning people
to stay the heck indoors because of blizzard conditions. In my case,
no fear of continuing the sedentary life this week--that will have to
wait until next week when I become a lazy fed. I've had PLENTY of
fresh air in the last few days!

Rick,

I would not bother to shovel, blow, or plow anything additional until the storm, especially the wind, passes. I did go out today and plow but I waited until the wind direction changed so I was not getting any more lake effect snow. Still I have no where near what you have there.

Good luck on the snow and the new job. If I was closer I would come by with the JD and help you move snow.
