If I were going to refurb another GMC, I'd sure be looking into the cost of
this stuff:

Ken,

I read the brochures and then went to the website and watched the video,
Mate this stuff is AMAZING. I've asked if there are any distributors in the
Houston area and in Australia.

Once they provide that info I'll check into the cost and share it with the
GMCnet.

Thanks!

Hi Ken,

How you coming on the engine?
I may be able to spend a day in Americus on March 19th and help you with
your project, if you're interested. I will be on the way to the LeConte
Lodge Airlift where we resupply the lodge for the year.
I have looked at the Aspen Aerogels before, the insulation value looks very
good, about R-10.5/in vs. foam at about R-6.5/in, this would be good on a
thickness basis.
As far as I know these test and ratings are comparable to the foam, not like
the bubble insulation where the high values are only true of heat traveling
in a downward direction with a specified airspace above the insulation and
the insulation perfectly clean.
Do you have any idea of the pricing?
The one thing that jumped out at me when I just looked at the specs is the
weight, about 9.5 lb/cu.ft. vs. about 2 lb/cu.ft. for foam.
I thought aerogels were extremely light, must be the matting adding the
weight.

Marsh,

If we're here, we'd sure enjoy having you. But, that's the day GMCMI
Montgomery starts, so I'm hoping that's where we'll be, after leaving here
the 15th or before.

I haven't done anything more about Aerogel than look at their web site.
Since I don't have an application for it now, there's no incentive. If I
were crazy enough to start another coach at my age, I sure would look into
it though. The fact that it can be used as a thermal break and that we
could squeeze several layers into the GMC's cavities should make it ideal if
not TOO expensive.

Ken,

I sent the message below in to the GMCnet but never got a copy back. It
appears that it did not get distributed, however, so I'll try again.

Hi Ken,
I hope you make it to the rally on schedule. I will stop by some other time.
You gona put any more brakes on it to go with the engine?
I still think the ultimate will be electric hydro boost, with the reaction
arm rear suspension.
I think that should be your next project, don't you just love me coming up
with projects for you.

Marsh

Here’s an old thread. I noticed some interest in insulation and came across this oldie that I’ve had in my saved items. I wonder if any advancements have been made with Aerogels?

Larry,

I did a Google search "buy Aerogel insulation" and the website below popped up:

http://www.buyaerogel.com/tag/insulation/

Rectangle, 1 ft x 0.9 ft x 6 mm, $25.00
Rectangle, 2 ft x 1.8 ft x 6 mm, $90.00
Rectangle, 4 ft x 1.8 ft x 6 mm, $175.00

ROUGH Guesstimate of cost

GMC ceiling = 20 ft long x 8 ft wide

$175 x 2 =$350 = I width @ 1.8 long

20 / 1.8 = 11

11 x $350 = $3850

Guess that answers that question! ;-)

Regards,
Rob M.
