[GMCnet] Cad 500 Distributor Cap [message #72978] |

I've just been browsing the RockAuto web site for Cad 500 parts needed for
my pending GMC installation. Since I'm going to move the Howell EFI from
the 455 to the 500, I need a distributor from an 80-81 Cadillac with the 368
ci 4-6-8 engine because it is computer controlled. RockAuto lists different
distributor caps dependent upon EFI or carburetor. Does anyone know why?
Obviously I need that for EFI, but since the Olds HEI distributors use the
same cap regardless of whether it's computer controlled, I'm curious about
why Cad is different.
TIA

Ken,
That distributor has the extra wire to use for retarding the timing
when starting.
You can modify the standard dist, if you like, but you'll need a
different module and wire harnesses.
Even the cap is different and there is a cooling hole at the base. The
cap is screwed down type, not the screw latch common type.
There is no vaccume advance.

Jim,
"...extra wire..." -- Does that mean it doesn't use the standard HEI/EFI
7-pin module, but a 3rd style I don't know about?
I'd noticed in the RockAuto photos that there were no spring latches and
wondered how one installed them.
Thanks,
Ken H.

Thanks, Larry, for the hint -- and the follow-up with John's address.

What I was thinking was that it uses the 7 pin module, instead of the
old 4 pin .
