Gmcers,
Looking for interesting methuds of making a living while on the road as a full time rver.i am aware of workcamping hosting vol etc.Id like to find a business or more reliable income?to feed my rv habit and travel across the us.i am semi retired and have Social security income.
but it dosent pay much.i initially was going to be a full timer.but unless you actually have income vrs
travel costs food gas etc.is there any feasable way other than workamping.i think i have a prety good idea as to seasonal work in parks.working for fhu gov sites or host? What am i over looking that might actually pay enough to travel.somewhat like a trucker would be paid per mile.i could take a trailer for addition space.whats the secret ?
Thanks in advance

If a guy had a trailer, the 'haulquery' thing would be interesting...not
much profit, but you'd meet people and travel where you never expected...and
make enough to pay for some gas..Hmmmm now what dpoes a trailer cost <VBG>

By far the easiest way is to write books and articles. There are
magazines on just about any subject you can imagine from ghost towns
and gold panning to cooking and wilderness hikes. All you need is a
good digital camera with telephoto lenses and a laptop with spell
checker. start right now and submit a couple articles to your local
paper just to get your feet wet. In fact you could submit a couple for
us to critic for you. Just for drill read a couple of the J.A. Jance
mysteries. Simple, easy read set in Bisby AZ. He uses local landmarks
and roads in his stories which several times has had me looking on the
map because I love that area. Go for it.
For me it always has been repair of cars, trucks and motorhomes. Find
out what is wrong, negotiate a price, and go for it. Don't expect them
to just pay you out of the goodness of their heart. Doesn't work that
way. Also drive them into town and let them purchase the parts, that
way if they stiff you there won't be any money out of your pocket.
Gee, I think I will expand this into an article and submit it to some
motorhome magazines.<G>.........Terry

A couple of good ideas Terry. Of course not all of us have your skill to fix things. Seems like a few good pics and a few good words about a fun place might sell themselves?
Interesting you in Washington like Bisbee, AZ. I married a girl from there. We used to go summer camping in the mtns at Greer, AZ. One summer we had been there about a week, and never saw a soul around the trailer next to us. Then out comes a middle age man who had been on a writing streak, sequestered in the quite of the pine forest for days.
Also interesting you like JA Jance. My father-in-law taught HER English in Bisbee schools. http://www.jajance.com/jajance.com/About_Me.html
hope that doesn't change your opinion of her books. Once we were eating at Dottie's, she was back in town (I think she now lives in Seattle), saw Jim and stopped to thank him for teaching her to write.

Terry,
Your "business practices" are very close to what mine were when I was
building hot rod Harley's in my spare time in Hong Kong. I would put
together a quote listing all the parts needed and a BUDGETARY estimate for
the hours and give it to the customer. If they decided to go ahead I would
require payment for the full amount for the parts. When the parts came in
would get them to bring the bike to the house and do the work. I kept a log
of what I did on a daily basis with columns "Date", "Time Start", "Time
Stop", and "Work Completed" When I was done I would send the customer the
invoice and the work log. I would always reduce the total hours to
compensate for coffee breaks, loo breaks, and provide a bit of a discount.
Quite often the customer would want to work with me on his bike (that way he
could say he did his own "wrenching") and I'd let them, however, I would
note that they would slow me down. After one guy semi-stiffed me (paid me
with a check that bounced but later paid in cash) I'd tell them to bring
final payment in cash and they could pick up the bike. Some times they would
balk and note "don't you trust me?" and I'd say sure I trust you but I don't
trust the way they drive here and you could get hit on the way home from my
place and killed and I'd be out the money! I would be sorry that they had
been killed but money is MONEY! We had a few people in the Harley circle
that had been hurt in accidents (me included) and one guy was killed in a
head on so that was a reasonable statement!

This weekend I am flying down to Little Rock, AR to drive a 23' GMC
back up here. One of my stops on the way back is Bisbee, AZ Just for
another look-see. Maybe a little time in Tombstone too. <G>
As for a writer in a camp ground, I ran into the same thing in
Colorado. Guy pulled in to the space next to us and never got out.
Four days later when we moved on he was still inside his camper
banging on his computer. To each his own.
As for JA Jance I didn't know one way or the other. Woman are not
offended at being called a man but a man can get a long way up on his
high horse if you call him a girl........Terry

Terry,
Don't forget the Ferguson bed and breakfast. Bring your own bed and
make your own breakfast. Got the WiFi working for the guest RV site.
We are pretty close to Tombstone (T-Shirt capital of AZ) and Bisbee.
Give a holler.

Funny thing about that is my experience making surf boards is what
gave me the ability to make the end caps for my cabinets. See, tied
that right into GMC. Can't get too much farther off
topic.<VBG>..........Terry
