I have not found a good way to install the AC compressor. I take the wheel off and then try lift it into place. Being just me it is never been easy.

I left it off last summer when I had to replace a head gasket while on trip to New York from AL.

The answer is to replace it with a Sanden or clone weighing maybe 1/2 as
much and performing as well or better.

Ken,
Does the Sanden unit capable of handling 2 evap. coils as the 6 piston unit?

Jim,

There a Sanden's of 'most any displacement you can think of, their model
number (509, 709, 715, etc) is the number of pistons, followed by the
displacement. A couple of years ago I got a manual from www.sanden.com with
a lot of such information. Seltec makes clones of the Sanden's; they claim
100% interchangeability with equivalent Sanden's.

But I don't know of anyone actually using two evaporators.

Ken,

Which model did you install?

My dash HVAC is stock (except the air-box mods to increase
air flow).

Which model (or models) would you suggest?

Thanks

I have replaced it twice alone. Once on my GMC and once on someone
elses. I took a long leather belt and placed it around the compressor
at the balance point. I then positioned the compressor on the floor
below the side of the engine and passed the loose end up to the top of
the engine.

I went into the GMC and while laying over the motor box opening I
pulled up on the belt with both hands. When I had it roughly in
position I held it with one hand and quickly reached for the rear bolt
and manuvered it into the hole in the bracket and compressor.

Once that bolt was in place it held the compressor and the rest went
easily.

Sorry, but I don't even know what the equivalent Sanden number is for the
Seltec I installed -- which number I also don't have. IIRC, it's a 9 ci
unit (the OEM A6 is 12 ci, IIRC). I bought it new off of eBay for $75 with
the serpentine pulley I required. The local A/C dealer told me the pulley
alone would have been almost twice that through him. I've got a similar
unit bought at Pull-a-Part for about $15 that seems to be OK from just
turning it manually. When getting one from a junk yard, you may not be able
to find, or interpret, the SD-709, etc., model numbers so I'd just get one
from the biggest car/van/RV I could find, assuming that the designer for the
vehicle chose one large enough for that vehicle.

Even through full line established companies, don't always charge outrageous
prices for them. For example, here's a new 14 ci clone for $120 BIN:

It's fun to do alone isn't it? I made a U shaped piece out of flat strap that fits over the floor and goes under where the compressor is supposed to be, then hung the compressor from it on some wire close to where it goes. Then it can be moved around to get the bolts started with out holding the whole thing up there. Bob Drewes told me about shimming the rear mount to keep from tweaking the end plate and maybe helping it to leak. Got a pic of that here:

Heres a pic of the fixture

Just what I did
