My beloved P.O. installed the Ragusa transmission pan with a temp sensor. The Ragusa pan adds a drain plug, a port for the temp sensor, an extra quart of fluid, and is also supposed to cool the fluid. If I can trust the gauge the fluid in the pan has not exceeded 150 degrees.

The transmission is just another thing I don't worry about. If it were to go out, Manny is only a few minutes away!

Or if you have an extra $185 laying around you can do this:

Larry, that is a good pan temp. Our's rarely moves off the 130 minimum peg. I have seen 190-200 on a hot day and a climb towing the Vibe, very short time element. Those readings are with an aluminum radiator and external cooler also. I monitor the converter too. Our tranny has a date of 10-90 on it. Never had an issue with it. I keep close check on fluid level and color. Change it every 25k or whenever it is handy.

Regarding how often to change the fluid in the transmission...

I am curious, when do most folks do this?

I have read several opinions on mileage.

It says about every 12000 miles in the book for the transmission and the
final drive. I do mine about every 12 months. I also change my external
filter at the same time. I do the internal filter about every 24K miles.
That is how I do mine yours may vary.

Thought there was only one filter (Fram FT-1019 or Wix 58882)

Can you tell me more about the internal one?

Part number, etc

Richard,

There is only one filter in the transmission and it is inside the pan.

There is no external filter.

The two part numbers you note are correct.

If you are a member of GMCMI check your Parts Interchange List as there are
seven other filter part numbers from other makers.

I learned from Alonzo, our technician about the value of an external
in line filter.
Make sure it is for transmission.
He told me that he found out in his class that they showed him how to
use the filter to see what could be happening in the transmission when
you open up that filter.
I'm sure that the restriction in the line was not important enough.
