Steve Phillips wrote on Sat, 30 January 2010 15:50 | Hi All
Having a choice in trans Lube.. I just had the lube in the 5 speed Ford Bronco 2 Changed and put in Dextron lube. Now I find out that the manual calls for SAE 80 W. Should I drain the Dextron out and put in 80 w --or is there that much difference???
Advice needed

Steve,
You make a statement and ask two questions.
Many manual transmissions use ATF as a lube, and it usually works. I don't recall what transmission was standard in the Bronco II.
Yes, There is a lot of difference.
Dextron (all versions and Dexron) are about SAE 20. If that actually matters, I cannot tell you without knowing more.
You say you had it changed. Did you pay someone to put the wrong fill in it? If so, was it his idea or yours. If it was his, take it back and let him fix it.
If it were mine and I planned to sell it soon, or it did not have much longer to live in any other case, I'd leave it.
On the other hand,
If I planned to be driving it a few more years, I prefer it get the correct fill.
Maybe someone in a Bronco group can give you a more direct answer.

In 1991 I bought a new S-10 with a 5 speed. GM used dexron in it from the factory. The trans howled and was rebuilt twice over the next year. It did not fix the problem. Finally the owner of the dealership who is a friend of mine asked if he could put 80 in it. I said yes and drove that trans for another 150,000 with no problems. If the book says to use gear oil 80 or 90 in it then that is what I would definitely use.
GM was trying to get better mileage out of the truck by using thinner oil.

""GM was trying to get better mileage out of the truck by using thinner oil.""
They were trying to use a single oil dispenser on the line. There are many things driven by manufacturing that are difficult to rationalize after the fact.
