The oil pressure kept dropping so I pulled into a truck stop. Now, anyone know where I should be towed? Id like a place that could do what it will take. Something has happened to the engine.

Bummer. Chucks speed and rv in west phoenix has done GMC work. If you can get them to tow you there that would be a good choice. if you need help pls call me at six oh two 751 2O7O

Dan,
Although they rarely fail, maybe you'll get lucky and It is just your oil pump or oil pump drive. The collapsed lifter problem (if that's what it was) would indicate some kind of oil pressure problem. It will still be kind of a major repair. You did the right thing by stopping before further damage to the crankshaft could occur. How much oil pressure did you have before you decided to shut it down? As I'm sure you know, the general rule of thumb is ten PSI for every 1000 RPMs.
When I first put the Buick V-6 in my '53 Jeep, it had scarily low oil pressure. Dropped to below 10 PSI at idle and wasn't as high as I would have liked to see it at speed. I ran it that way for a couple thousand miles and when I rebuilt it, the machinist checked and polished the crank and said to run standard size bearings in it. It turned out that the rear main bearing had been eroded form sitting with old oil in it for a long period before I resurrected the engine to put in my Jeep. It's been fine ever since, and I beat it half to death when I run it in the sand dunes.
Hopefully you can get a tow to Miguel's. If you need to stay in Tucson for a couple of days, our guest room is ready

Carl,
That might just be a good guess now that I 'm thinking about it a
little. He also dropped vacuum and I was a bit puzzled about that
because I kept thinking it was a spun rod bearing. I couldn't tie
that to a spun rod bearing. When I talked to Dan in Q he indicated
that it was coming and going and he didn't define it as a knock, more
like a lifter collapsing. I bet you're right on this one and Dan
won't have to buy a new engine. Heckuva lot easier fix too.

Dan, at least it is somewhat more pleasant there than if you had been at home. I logged an hour on the snowblower this morning. I know Poplar Bluff got a lot of snow so I assume Dexter did as well.
