After the March 2010 Convention in Montgomery Texas, I will close the used parts business known as GMC Motorhome Reclamation Services(GEMRECS). Between now and then, it is my hope to find a buyer to continue this endeavor. If not, I will only sell the remaining inventory in bulk, not individual sales, until it is exhausted.
Having grossed %50,000 in 2.5 years, I have proved the business to be viable and a necessary part of the GMC motorhome experience and can only be more so as the coaches become fewer from which to remove spare parts.
The ideal buyer would be a GMC motorhome devotee having the capacity to park several coaches and a facitlty to remove, sort, price and store parts. More than one person is needed for removing parts, administration, attending club events as well as GMCMI conventions, advertising including mailings to all GMCMI and local club members, maintaining the Web site, etc.
A secondary buyer could be a salvage yard, preferably an RV salvage yard. They have the space, personnel and equipment to dismantle GMC motorhomes. While I believe that devotion and knowledge of GMCs is important, these are not critical and salvage operators know their trade.
The business, including loose parts, six donor GMC coaches (all with engines, transmissions and final drives), the enclosed 6x12 trailer, the Web site and the GEMRECS name are for sale for just $10,000, roughly a fifth of their costs.
The potential is enormous with over 7000 GMC motorhomes still operational or nearly so, I have reached only about 400 people including several repair shops. Every year, the demand will increase due to need, obsolete parts and fewer coaches. Also, this a sole source business.
While I am proud of what I have done and will continue to be a GMC motorhome owner, the business needs more than I can give in time, energy and marketing. At 71, it is time to relax and play a little golf, but not here. The Houston heat nearly killed me last summer and I have vowed not to spend another summer here. That is the primary reason I am selling the business. My deepest thanks and appreciation to all who have trusted me, bought from me and encouraged me. It has been 2.5 years of work, joy, learning and most of all, associating with so many GMCers
