Will I read just about every site on A/C , now Im lost went out to look at the way mine is set up and to my suprise the lower vents are just there for the recycle door see pics .now can I just reroute the recycle through the clove box and drill and cut the opening to the condencer from the inside so that the lowwers are blowing cold or is this not the way to go Thanks Russ 1973 Canyonlands http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/showphoto.php?photo=32178&title=air-conditioning-vents&cat=5

Russ,

You're right, that's a confusing setup. Does the slot into which your lower
center vents attach appear to be a factory-cut opening? I'm not familiar
with '73-'74 so it may be OEM. Seems to me I saw somewhere that there was a
factory retrofit to install those center vents like the 75-76 coaches have;
and I'm pretty sure Golby advertised them at one time.

If you can't see the Max Air door through that opening, or the A/C
evaporator which it conceals, the back wall of the HVAC box has not been
modified and is still blocking the Max Air flow. Frankly, it seems to me
too complex a modification to consider. If that opening is actually serving
as a return air duct, it won't do you any good to open the hole behind the
glove box into the fresh air plenum -- that opening would only augment what
you've got.

I've got the Type II HVAC box I removed from my '76 setting on an outside
workbench. I can take and post pictures tomorrow if it will help. In fact,
if you want to pay shipping, the box is yours.

That does sound like an incomplete upgrade then, doesn't it? I can't
imagine how one would incorporate a Max Air door without removing the
under-hood HVAC box. About all I can imagine is cutting through the black
steel wall you should see through that hole. That would reveal the back
side of the evaporator and allow flow through it directly into the cockpit.
However, that wouldn't be the end of it: There'd have to be a sleeve
through the gap between that wall and the firewall to eliminate the path to
the fresh air plenum & the blower. Then the "behind the glovebox" hole
would have to be cut to provide air to the blower.

Then you'd have heater problems to deal with, because there would be no way
to divert the flow through the evaporator without the Max Air door -- the
heater would heat a-tall.

Seems to me a Type II or III box -- or maybe better, a complete new box --
is the logical solution.

Is it worth it to replace a 73 Air conditioning dash unit with a later model or is the updates Jim K offers enough. And are the updates just parts from the later models?
