I do not post often as we do not yet have a GMC so I am more of a lurker. (sounds illegal) Maybe some of you remember that my wife Lisa and I have been considering a GMC for the past couple of years. We think we want a rear twin Royale but the myriad of floor plans offers lots of possibilities. We are waiting for Anne and Bob Gillian to return north so that we can drive down and check out theirs for possible purchase. What we would like to do is meet up with some of you at a rally and have the opportunity to see first hand some of the different models and floor plans before we make a final decision. Looking at some of the rally schedules we are wondering about Bean Station and would people be willing to show us their coaches? Pictures are nice but Lisa wants to see the floor plans and understand how her medical needs could be accomodated.
Yes, cost is a major consideration as Lisa has a terminal illness and has not worked in a few years. Losing her income just before retirement hurt. We want to travel to see the grankidlets and the GMC seems a perfect way to go. I have previously had a 24ft and 345 Airstream so we have a good idea of what to expect when we travel.
Bill Bryant graciously offered me a tour of his a couple of years ago and spent quite a bit of a Saturday answering my questions. Thank you Bill. Lisa was unable to make that trip and we are thinking that one trip with the opportunity to see multiple coaches would be the best way to go. Does this sound feasible?

I can assure you that most of us, especially Dixielanders at Bean Station
will be glad to show off our coaches. Keep an eye on
www.gmcdixielanders.org for more information about the rally. We look
forward to meeting you. Who knows, you might even find someone there with
your "dream coach" for sale.

Wayne,
The number of people that would not be happy to show their coaches off at Bean Station could probably be counted on one hand. You are welcome to see mine. Another option would be at the GMCMI Convention at Montgomery in March. We have open house on two afternoons and there will probably be over 150 coaches there. You don't find many people being reclusive about their coaches. You don't need to be a member to attend either.

Wayne,
It's a bit further down the road but you'd be welcome at the Eastern States
rally in Calhoun, Georgia. It'll be at a KOA. They'll have some cabins and
nicer lodges onsite. Several chain hotels are less than five miles away. The
KOA is less than two miles from I-75. Civil War sites and museums are in the
area as well as a Tanger outlet mall (if you like shopping). You'll be able
to see a variety of coaches for sure. I'd also suggest getting an
opportunity to drive them if possible.
The rear twin Royale with side dry bath is what I wish we had instead of a
rear bath model. But, we're used to it.
I nice one just sold about four months ago in the Buffalo area. It was
redone a couple of years ago by Sirum's in Florida.
Again, we'd be glad to have you at the Eastern States rally April 22-25.
Initial information is on the website and more will be there in three weeks.

Hi Wayne & Lisa,
In a couple of months we will know the GMC Nor'Easters (New England) rally schedule, they might be the closest ones for a visit. There should be one at Eastford, CT, probably July, likely the closest to you (and us). There will be rallies every month starting May, but they are often nearer Boston than NY. We can keep you posted if you wish.

How about Robert Brooks over in Vermont? Or the couple of folks straight N in Canada, seems like a nice trip in much warmer weather. A few calls and you might find someone who knows someone with a coach like you are thinking of.
Sure tough to find a coach with the trim you want in the condition you want.

Do the Southern Tier. They are really transforming Rte 17 into I86. No tolls, better scenery and mostly 4 lane across the State. Fuel is cheaper and the Thruway tolls just went up another 5%. If you do head up Paradox way, feel free to stop. Also be aware that they just blew up the Champlain bridge to Vermont. They found the piers were deteriorated beyond repair. It was the same type of bridge that failed in Minneapolis. They estimate it will be another year until they get a new one in place so it is a 75 mile detour to get around the lake into VT.

Routes 5 and 20 run East/West thru the length of Upstate NY [Buffalo to
Albany] and altho they go thru towns, it isn't a bad alternative to usurious
tolls of the Thruway.
When the Thruway was touted by then Gov. Dewey and his politicos in 1946, it
was clearly sold on the basis that it would be a pay/user system only until
the year 1975. Yes, that long past 1975.
Not only has it been a toll road ever since, but each year the rate is
increased. And they count a GMC as a '3 axle' so it is at least a 50% plus
premium over a passenger car.
We avoid using it.
Not also mention the pavement is in sorry shape in many places
NY isn't far behind the kingdom of Kalifonia in fiscal responsibility

Maintenance and upgrades are one thing but massive overhaul is off limits. I have a 69 AMC Ambassador that was taken down to the last nut and bolt that has not been finished yet so she has a point. And the 66 has waited 4 years to get into the toy garage. I have to concede defeat on that one.
