Ken,
My association with USAA began in 1961. I have tested them
periodically for competitiveness with other companies. No
one has ever come close. Our son, a career US Army officer
and our daughter have used only USAA for their families'
insurance needs. In Texas, USAA sub-contracts RV insurance
to Progressive. They bill annually. Cost is slightly less
than when sold directly by USAA. Still USAA for RVs in
Alaska.
While USAA does little/no advertising (as you noted), other
insurance companies know them well!!

Bob,
United Services Automobile Association is a mutual insurance
company founded
about 1927, IIRC, strictly for US Army officers. It
gradually extended
coverage to officers of other services, active and retired.
Over the past
10 years or so it has begun to cover ex-dependents, then
NCO's, then any
active service member, and just lately, any ex-service
member. For that
limited client?le, they don't do much advertising. But it's
one of the top
rated companies in the country with a very good customer
support rating.
There's also USAA Federal Savings Bank, and a brokerage
division. Almost
all of my finances are handled by them. Father & son, I've
been with them
since 1952.
Ken H.
