While not a direct result of Nylander's video (I have had this on the list for a while), we are planning to do a Blue Ridge Parkway tour in the spring. Our current plan has there at the end of March. We are planning to start at the south (Cherokee) end.

The AAA guides and maps of the area have been ordered up, but am now trying to find a good BRP specific guide book. I have found more than a few in searches, but as we learned with the RT66 tour, they are not all equal.

Can somebody that has experience with a guide (I did not say a good experience) please offer his own opinions about what books might be available?

And, is Rt441 from Gatlinburg south going to be a serious issue for a 23 with 3.07 and no toad?

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt,

Rt. 441 was not an issue for me and our 26' Royale, but as my friend Chuck pointed out to another GMCer raising your same question, I'm an old truck driver with many miles under my belt. As with flying, may be an issue for some and not others.

I received this from Dr. Medford related to the three Blue Ridge Parkway GMC videos I posted on YouTube. Perhaps you might find some help in the URLs he mentioned.

Please keep me posted as I'd like to share your experience this spring, if open to others.

Matt,

When you go, take time to go both ways on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It looks like an entirely different place when you do.

Matt-
Couple of points from someone who lives along the BRP.
- The Eastern States Spring Rally is April 22-25th
- The Eastern States Rally is in Calhoun Georgia, at the foot of the
Blue Ridge Mountains
- Late April is a beautiful time on the parkway for flowers, views, and
animals (the bears will be out)
- In March, it can snow quite a bit at the higher elevations of the BRP
and close it down. The ice drops trees on the road.
- If you want to return via BRP, go south to Atlanta burbs, go East and
take I- 75 up to BRP area
- If you want to enjoy just the Virginia BRP experience, you can travel
up I-40 to I-81 east and pick up the BRP in Southern Virginia
There are some great towns along the BRP including-
Damascus- Appalachian Trail town
Bedford- site of the WW II Memorial (must see)
Lexington- must take the tour- good campground nearby
Waynesboro- Spring trout fishing right in town, good restaurants like
South River Grill (my favorite)
Charlottesville- Monticello, UVa, good wineries
There are several wineries near the BRP, none of any quality until you
reach Afton Mountain (milepost 1). Veritas Vineyard and King Family
Vineyard are both off Rt 250 east and are quality operations.
There are several nice camp grounds including Natural Bridge KOA and
Misty Mountain.
We plan to be in Texas in late March and in Georgia and Tennessee in April.
If you haven't had enough when you reach mile post 1, take Skyline Drive
north to I-66 then go visit Harpers Ferry .
Hope this helps and let me know if I can be of more help.

PS- Enjoy some of the short trails but don't even think of doing the
Humpback Rocks climb

You forgot to tell him to detour over to Ashville, NC to visit the Biltmore
Estate, The nearest thing I know of to the palaces of Europe.

I would love to run it both ways, but there are issues with time and other things on the schedule.

If you do the Biltmore let HER take the regular tour. HE will have a much better time on the "Rooftop" tour. Quote from the website "Enjoy magnificent views of the estate from the rooftop and balconies. See rooms closed to the general public and learn secrets of the house."

It was a great tour, they did a great job covering the mechanical and civil aspects of the house. And yes you do go out on the roof, the attic, and the basement.

Thanks for the heads up guys. Now all I have to do is talk DW into a 97$ tour (that may be tough, she is Dutch).

We drove the Parkway last October (in a Chevy Tahoe) and loved it. We had a National Geographics guide to "scenic drives" in the US and used it a lot on our 9000 mile trip from Tacoma Washington. We went onto the Parkway from the southern part of Virginia and drove it south. We discovered quite by chance "The Moutain Music National Park." There was a concert going on when we arrived, so we listened for awhile, bought a CD and listened to mountain music the rest of the drive on the Parkway. It added to the ambiance!
I found the National Geographic guide invaluable for finding the really scencic routes and keeping us off of freeways.
Have fun, I envy you!

You may find the southern end of the parkway closed at that time of year. I have been there three times in March and early April and have not seen the last 50 miles yet. But you will have a good time either way. It is one of America's great road trips. I look forward to doing it again. I have a couple of maps I will send you if you PM me with you address.
