Saying thanks just does not seem enough for what Bob de Kruyff and Jeff Willard did for Teri and me today.
We had 2 problems. Rear brakes were not adjusted and the rear master cyl. was not working. We were trying to stop this beast with fronts only, not fun at all. Bob brought the M/C and he determined as soon as he drove it that it was not working on either front or back. We jacked up rear and had ZERO braking there. Replaced M/C. While adjusting the rears Jeff found a leaking line. It was cracked at the end of the flare that butts up to the wheel cylinder. Fixed that, in 2 hours, bled them good and adjusted the rest of the rears. We Got Brakes and very good ones. I am sure that we gradually lost braking and I never noticed until the M/C quit and I could not stop in Dallas last Friday night.
Bob did 400 miles to help us and Jeff 100. We all went to supper in Duncan and they departed. What good folks drive GMC motorhomes. I am also very thankful to all those online that helped me, especially Ken Burton.
Now, we can continue to Quartzsite in a few days.
I hope I can repay this good deed by helping others. Never be afraid to call a Blacklist GMC owner or get on this net and cry for help.
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
I will have a few pictures on our blog later this evening.
Dan and Teri

Dan,

GREAT!

You forgot to mention one thing; you've learned a lot about the brake system
which will help you "repay this good deed by helping others."

Have a safe trip to Quartzsite!

All the best,

Just looked at the pictures -- thanks.
Would be very helpful if you and Bob could tell us why he knew so quickly that the master cylinder was bad.

Dennis, I will wait for Bob to get home and reply. He is the man.
I just busted the entry door latch now. Have to hold it tight and lock it to get it to hold. Maybe I can disassemble it tomorrow and figure out what broke.
Thanks again for all of the help from everyone on the net. A problem such as this is a minor one as long as you are working on someone else's coach. But, when it is my own, seems it is always a major one. Surprised

Dan & Terri,
Sure happy for you both that you now have brakes thanks to your white
knights. It makes it so much easier when you can share your problems with
other people that can help. Have a safe journey and enjoy it but go easy on

Great, it's not as simple as it seems. Seldem does both front and back go out.

That's good news. Thank heavens that the problem happened gradually and not instantly! Sounds like Bob knows his brakes. Glad your coach is safe now.

I had an interesting saturday too. So while the tranny is out, I decide to pickup a Diesel gasket set. this set is much thicker than the stock, and it has an alum or steel insert. It fits 95% perfectly, but you have to cut two tabs off the front of the side gaskets so they clear the front motor mount.

The front gasket is rubber and has a pilot nub that lines up with a hole. the rear does not, but it is formed with little tabs for the side gaskets to slot into. Nice.

I don't think this motor has ever been cracked in 115K miles. Other than the dirty oil, the cylinder bores look nice and I didn't see anything worrying. I was surprised to see only two bolt main caps. Thought this mill had four.

What a pain, had to pull the steering bar and the flexplate. I had a little scare when one of the tie rod ends mushroomed a bit from the gear puller. I had to use the one that has the cup on the end of the drive bolt. Luckily it is a 1/2-24 (I think) thread and I was able to run a die over it to clean the end up.

I drained 8 quarts of oil out of the beast! She's all filled up with fresh oil now and clean sheet of cardboard underneath (leak telltale) and waiting for tomorrow's trans lifting. Should be another one of those days.

Now I remember why I no longer work on my own cars!

Let me understand. With the trans out and the front motor mount still in place you were able to pull the engine oil pan.

Having never done this myself I'm just trying to understand what is possible.

When half of the sytem isn't "pumping" you can feel one of the pistons bottom out when you depress the pedal--it's subtle but once you've experienced it before, you'll recognize it right away. However, that alone doesn't necessarily mean it's the M/C since other things such as lack of fluid or a broken line can cause the same feel. In this case there was no dramatic fluid loss or leak so the only thing left was the M/C--we could spin the rear wheels freely with the pedal fully depressed. We did find as small leak at one of rear lines once we got full pressure. The rears needed adjusting as well, but that was just the icing on the cake. This coach has strong brakes in a stock configuration!

This is not original with me but was asked how I felt when these guys showed up. I did feel just like the calvary was riding up. I was the happiest GMC owner around and we had not even started work. Just seeing Bob pull in was all I needed. I knew that his experience was going to fix our brakes, no doubt about it. We had a blast, Teri included. As soon as Bob put his foot on the brake, as we drove down the road, he told me what was wrong. We returned home and went to work on it. Life is good, stolen from Arch.

Dan--you're giving me a lot more credit than is due!! BTW Jeff is a true car guy and is right up there with the best! It's such a small world in that he almost went to GMI like I did. He went a different route, but I could tell right away he's a not only a neat guy, but a great asset to the GMC community!
