Billy Massey informed me yesterday that Dr. Oldsmobile, Joe Mondello, has
acquired a GMC and joined GMCMI. Since he now lives in Crossville, TN, I
took the liberty of inviting him, by email, to join the Dixielanders and
Eastern States. Last night I got an answer from his wife, Mary, asking a
few more questions and telling me that they're leaving 4 Jan to go pick it
up. I sent her still more information, including a copy of the Black List.

This afternoon, Joe called me. We spent 45 - 60 minutes talking about GMC
clubs, GMC's, Oldsmobile engines, Tennessee, intake manifolds, etc., etc.,
etc.

He's volunteered, and committed to presenting seminars at rallies.
Specifically, he'll tell us at Bean Station about his new facility in
Crossville, new techniques and equipment they're using on engines, and
answer questions. He's even volunteered to have a rally at his 17 acre
facility (dry camping though), including touring his facility, etc.

If he becomes 1/10th as enthusiastic about GMC's as he is about Olds
engines, we'll have a great new member. He said he's admired the GMC for
years but just never seemed to have the time to bother getting one. A
friend on the west coast who's downgrading to a bigger new coach made him an
offer he couldn't refuse, so they're going after it.

During our conversation, we got into intake manifolds. I told him I'd first
bought and used his zinc to fill intake crossovers about 8 years ago, etc.
He doesn't care much for how we're doing it. He says that by only filling
the crossover, even with the SS plates, we're not protecting the manifold
from enough heat and potential distortion. He says that every Olds engine
he builds has the crossover port in the HEAD filled with zinc, as well as
filling the intake crossover (which he noted, by the way, could be done with
'most anything, even epoxy, since the zinc in the head shields it from
intense heat.

In response to my inquiry about erosion of the zinc, he said he's got an
Olds racecar engine he's run for 11 years without any erosion. To my
comment that some of us protect the zinc with SS plates, he reiterated that
the heat still gets to the manifold. He did agree, though that a filled
crossover is far, far better than an open on. And he confirmed that the
zinc WILL fill leaking cracks -- I've never been completely satisfied that
the different coefficients of expansion of iron and zinc wouldn't generate
potential leakage paths; apparently not.

A lot of renowned "experts" are standoffish and seemingly don't want to be
bothered or want to keep their secrets. I found none of that in Joe; he
claims to love doing what he does, goes to work 5 days a week, including
personally building engines, teaching classes, racing, etc. Very open and
outgoing. We'll enjoy him.

Ken,

Great news about Joe Mondello. I have bought several products from him
over the years. It will be interesting to compare Joe and Paterson's views
on the Olds engines.............

Good luck on your TBI; you will get it right eventually.

Ken,

I'd say Joe and Dick are kindred spirits; two gear heads that LOVE what

This is great news. I proposed a rally to Crossville back about a year or so ago when a story was aired and pointed out here. It never got off the ground but I'm glad to see that he will be at Bean Station. I too am interested in his take on the Olds 455.

Joe's already volunteered to have a rally at his 17 acre level place in
Crossville. Dry camping but that would be a small price to pay for spending
the weekend touring his facility & hearing his lectures.

Ken,

As I remember, there are a few RV campgrounds in town. It would be a small price to pay for a place to gather that would have hookups.

I tend to not go with Joe's comment that zinc will stay in the head on
a motor home. In a race car, yes.
I have seen this several times.
There is not one person that I believe 100%.
I'm always learning from others and Dick Patterson knows he doesnot
have all the answers.

I'm speaking in regards to engines and GMC MH only.
Dick Patterson is never hesitant to say that he is not sure or have no idea.

Jim,

I appreciate and agree that the engine in a motorhome could / would work
harder than one in a race car which would drive the temperature of the
cylinder heads up and I don't mean to be difficult but has anyone tried
filling the head of a 455 or 403 in a GMC with zinc and have it fail?

We had 2 customers here that had the head filled with Zinc. It was not
there when we tore down the units.
Not easy to fill the head as there is a point where you need to stop
before you block the exhaust going out. Look at a head both sides and
you'll see.
Did you know that you can have a piece of metal travel from one
cylinder to another?

Who needs hookups. I can live on 12 volts for a few days. I would rather be on site. Camping fees would more than pay for a few gallons of gas in the generator if needed.

I went to the 49ers Port Costa rally in November with no hookups. It was one of the best rallies I ever attended. Great people and a great rally there.

this is Joe's restored AA/FA Fiat being fired up in 2007......always wanted to see this car run but the AA/FA guys rarely came to the east coast.....I understand the vintage AA/FA circuit is now making east of the mississippi tours now.....
this car is powered by a BB Chevy but was my favorite of the fuel altereds........really glad to hear he is now in our area now ...
