I landed at rest area just east of Crossville, Tenn. last night about 8pm e.s.t. I called my friend this morning about 8 and he guided me in and we had breakfast. I am ensconced in a nice little RV park called Spring Lake RV Resort here in Crossville. I will probably just stay the day and part of tomorrow then leave before noon for points south via US 27. Americus looks like a pretty fair run from here so I may not make it until Monday. With the Holiday week, I'm hoping traffic around Atlanta will not be too bad. However, looking at the map, it appears I can stay on 27 all the way South of Columbus, avoiding Atlanta, then go east on 280 right into Americus. How's that sound Ken?
Dave, I probably won't be able to get down your way until after the first of the year.

Ken,

I haven't driven US-27 (also GA-1/Martha Berry Highway all the way through
GA) between Chattanooga and Columbus in a long time so I don't know whether
the planned 4-laning is complete up that way. If it is, that should be a
great route -- it's supposed to bypass every town along the route except
Colquitt, HER homedown 'way down south. If it's not all 4-lane now, it can
be slow going at times -- Atlanta sprawl affects even that far west. :-(

If you're into leisurely, off-interstate travel, as I am, that's the way to
come. But if you're 2+ in the coach, Atlanta's usually not too bad: get in
the HOV lane and roll merrily along at the speed limit (don't worry about
the 80+ mph traffic around you). You can drive from the TN or FL line to
Atlanta on I-75 at the average traffic speed of 79 mph. But when you get to
Atlanta, you'll have to speed up to stay with traffic. :-(

Coming down 27, don't wait to take US-280E (you might do like a visitor last
week, miss the turn, and wind up going 90 miles out of the way via US-82).
Turn east just before Cusseta on GA-26 to Buena Vista and Ellaville, where
you take US-19S. about 9 miles later, the new pavement will change to old
at Rawley road on the right. Take the next right at OHara Rd and we're in
the 3rd house on the left. 110. White brick. Should be about 340 miles
from Crossville to here.

I just checked the mileages with Street Atlas: It's actually shorter to
come I-75 through Atlanta, 333 miles. If you choose that route, get off of
I-75 south of Atlanta at exit 218, GA20W to get over to US-19. That's 4
lanes almost all the way here, with little traffic and no problems in the
few construction zones. Follow it until you get here.

Let us know when your schedule firms up; I'm considering a day trip N. of
Atlanta some time in the next week or so.
