Hello all,

We are southbound i39 in Illinois. When we exceed about 50 mph we hear
from the engine a constant higher pitched sqeaking sound. It seems to
lessen when we release the accelerator. We suspect it might be a loose
belt, possibly the alternator? We stopped and opened engine
floorboard, started the motor, all was normal. Reved the motor a
little heard some squeaking, one belt looked like it vibrated a
little. Suggestions? Should we stop and try to tighten alternator
tension?
Thank you

Southbound,
Mike and Steph

Sounds like it can be a belt. The vibration you see is normal but can get worse with a loose belt. I'd start with tightening the alternator. Are you pulling a high electrical load? I doubt it's the power steering belt going straight down the road.

Mike,

It would be a very good idea for you to stop now and at lease try to tighten the belts. The only one that has an excuse to squeal at road speed is the alternator belt. If you let it go too long, you will not be able to tighten what you have left.

Good Luck

If you are almost home or will soon be at a better location for a fix you can put a little honey on the belt. (When the engine is stopped!) It will stop slipping and shut up for about 100 miles.

(Man, I am going to be beat up about this suggestion. Cutting wood with a buzz saw when I was a kid... great fix for a falt belt.)

Mike,
You might want to stop at a parts house and pick up some spare belts.
It is hard to replace a belt when you don't have one.

Could be a vacuum leak?

Could be a vacuum leak?

A vacuum leak would be louder at higher vacuum/lower speed, and probably go away at the manifold pressure (vacuum) gets there.

I got thinking about the noise. It could be the AC/clutch or the fan clutch.

The next time you hear it, turn on the AC and see if the noise goes away.

Sometime reach in the fan shroud (with the engine not running) and rock the fan forward and backward to see if there is any play in the clutch.

The previous suggestions were probably the cause of the noise but I thought I would give you some more possibilities.
