Netters
I was outside doing my rear brakes today, and since I'm changing every shoe,
cylinder and spring, I thought I might as well change the master cylinder...
What is the Master Cylinder of choice these days? Except for the 1and 1/8
on the first rear boggie, it's all stock...

All the p-30/40 ones seem to be defective new.
We send them down to a rebuilder to have ithem pre bled and checked
out as we purchase 12-20 at one time.
Other than the Delco brand, the other brands all come from one source
from mainland China.
The Chinese should stick to cooking and give up manufaturing parts.

Unfortunately, until more and more people realize that there's a lot more to an item than just it's initial price, we won't see any real improvement. The old adage of "You get what you pay for" couldn't more true than it is today.
Parts such as master cylinders should be chosen for the best, not the cheapest. A few dollars saved isn't worth an accident or worse.

Mike,
Why not just remove the one you have installed and rebuild it yourself?
I would trust my (your) workmanship more than some guy in the PRC!

Up until a few years ago I never heard of someone buying a new or rebuilt master cylinder. A cheap rebuild kit and a few passes with a brake cylinder hone is all that is usually necessary. I did buy a rebuilt one for my GMC only because I wanted the larger size piston. Unfortunately I do not remember the part number on it but it was around $25.00 exchange. It was the same cylinder size as the P-30 only it used the OEM casting.

Has anyone even tried to buy a MC rebuild kit recently? Out of curiosity, I
went to rockauto.com and checked for '75 Olds Vista Cruiser.
They've got 4 different kits listed, from Dorman, Raybestos, and Delco.
Each of them has a note about Moraine vs Bendix castings and/or
"aftermarket". Apparently Delco Moraine was OEM and Bendix aftermarket (or
perhaps alternate production?).
The notes are so scrambled that even if I knew which casting I was working
on, I couldn't tell which kit to buy. Prices range from $20.99 to $27.79.
Information, even if of little value. :-)
Oh, for the days when you could walk into Western Auto, search through the
cubby holes on the counter, and find each of the little pieces to fix 'most
any brake, carb, starter, generator, fuel pump, water pump, etc!

Ken--I've never heard that one before--sounds very interesting. I'm almost wondering if that compares to the 78 master cylinder which was specific to 78 only. I have never found an interchange number for it an as far as I know, it is only available from Cinnabar. I'm running a 73-77 replacement on my 78 with OK results. The only reference I've been able to find about the 78 M/C was a statement "increased capacity for 78".

I just remembered what I got.
The OEM cylinder was 1 1/8" or 28mm
I got a 1 1/4" or 31.6mm
the P30 was a 34 mm.
So my previous statement was not entirely true. I got one larger than OEM but not as large as the P30 one.
I used Wagner part number F108148.

We live in America and because of that I guess I have to say "different strokes" but guys really, why take the chance and go through all the hassles of looking through Rock Auto, the Delco and NAPA listings and all that crap sifting through a maze of stuff trying to figure out what to get to fix your brakes. Don;t you know there are dealers waiting for your call that actually have the exact part you need and have no other brake master cylinders to choose from other than the one you need-- new and at a cost that is so competitive it really makes no sense to look further? I guess it's just a bad day for me and I should not let this effect me so much but probably whoever you have a relationship who has specialty GMC parts has the master cylinder you need and if you are going to order it from someone why don't you order them from us!

Jim,
We all have to vent on one thing or another.but as a gmc owner we are mostly cheap scapes or we woulda bought the $100,000 fancy jobs you just drive off the lot and go rving.
we like to know how they work run and break and then know how to repair them at the cheapest rate possible.even if you offered free brake master cylenders and only charged labor id bet there still would one who think your over charging them.and take it to there local shop or mech or guys like me who live 1000ands of miles away and not able to go to you.

That is true, I and I can't speak for Jim K. but I do not sell rebuild kits, brakes on a 12,000 lb. projectile is too important to do anything less than putting as much as possible all new parts on. A new original design brake master cylinder is $89, with the bleeding plugs ready to put on. I have to say this is the best way to go.
As far as the P-30 master cylinder, again brakes are too important and too libelous to modify and I do not offer those parts. Maybe Jim K. does.
I mouthed off and i am sorry-- it's difficult to sit back and not say something when folks are in my opinion on the wrong track. I need to remember myself everyone is free to do things the way they want-- just scares me when I see things getting -- well scary.
