Big snow storm here in the NE. We usually take the GMC to Philadelphia Eagles home games, but I chickened out today. Afraid the back end could swing around even tho its FWD. Did I do the right thing?

I've driven mine in minor snow conditions and have had no troubles with it. I have read that if tire cables are placed on the front, (don't know if they placed them on back wheels), it had no trouble climbing around in the mountains during a snow event. I don't think the person that posted it mentioning the type of tire cables they used, but he said he was able to pass vehicles having traction issues on a steep mountain grade. His posting might be in the archive under a "snow" search if you want to read it.

Big snow storm here in the NE. .... Did I do the right thing?

My '78 came from my PO with snow chains (cables) and he said he had used them. So I know it has been done.

Even though, I think you did the right thing. The idea I have is to use the chains to get OUT of trouble that I get in by accident... not to get INTO trouble! (Just like the post about 4 wheel drive.)

we have had many GMCers over the years going skiing in their GMCs.

They just chain up the front, and go for it.

I have been caught several time on the freeway in the snow (not by choice)
and when the snow plow turns around, so do I ;>)

Not my choice of camping, but some times stuff, happens.

I failed to mention that it is 125 miles from Carlisle to Philly and coming home tonight after the game was my greatest fear. Black ice etc. Well now I can watch it from the couch. Thanks for the replies.

G'day,

The guys up in Benton Harbor, MI who built the Avion agreed with GMC as the
small door in the right side between the front wheel and main door is for
the ski storage compartment.

Double Trouble came with a set of chains so guess the PO agreed too!

Fortunately here in Sydney it don't snow or I'd be off for warmer climes!

If you use cable chains, be very gentel. They will snap in slushy snow
as the rear needs to track in a different grove.

Now there's a reason to use the front wheel spacers.

Yea, when I went down there, I was really worried about what went in
coming back out. Still can't figure out why it didn't. :-)

There are three things a vehicle has to do: Go, stop, and steer. All
three are affected by snow. Cables on the front tires help a lot with
the first, a minimal amount with the second, and might well hinder the
third.

And then there is the issue of width. Yesterday and today, there have
been many times when I was glad I was in my Subaru, wedging between
plow banks and parked vehicles. There is no way in the world I would
want to be driving the GMC around here right now.

(There is also the issue that the GMC has 18" of snow piled on top of
it, and on the truck parked behind it, and clearing two vehicles we
actually need plus blowing snow off 1000 feet of driveway was enough
fun for one weekend.)

Rick "whose Subaru is capable in the snow, but whose GMC is not"
