This looks to be a truly excellent site. I have not gone through it all, as it is very extensive, but what I have seen does agree with the information I have accumulated in my mind for many years, and puts it into a well done format. And I am willing to trust what is new to me, as what I already "know" agrees with the material presented.
Thanks, John, for posting the URL

Ken: Try turning off your virus protection for a few minutes and then check the site. I'll bet it is some strange thing there which is causing your problems. One main reason I went to Apple was to get rid of the anti virus stuff, which drove me nuts. I am not an Apple snob, but it sure did get rid of a lot of things like you are having to deal with.

Ken,
Did you try pinging the site? It should come back as 64.202.189.170. If there is no answer you probably have an ISP routing problem and you can try a tracert to batteryfaq.org to see where it fails.
If it resolves to a different address then whomever your DNS is has a problem. If it is a DNS issue change your DNS to 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 in your IP properties for that machine.

Are you using "OpenDNS" or some other DNS server other than your ISP's? Could it be in your router?
This is a strange one.

Nope, I use bellsouth.net exclusively, which is why I suspect I'll
have to resort to tech support. The only router is my wifi access
point, which shouldn't be involved it this problem.

If we are talking about DSL check the filters ion all your phones.
The filter on one of my phones went bad and my system kept
shutting down. When I replaced the filter problem went away.
Tech support said filter problems can cause all kinds of
weird problems

David,
Yep, routed through proxify.com, we reached it.
I'll be curious to see if the same problem arises tomorrow. And what
bellsouth will have to say if it does.
Thanks,
Ken H.

It does resolve to the correct address, but then times out on the 19th
hop -- consistently the same routing and timeout location; is there a
way to change the routing?

No unfortunately. I know of no way to source route IP like IBM protocols do. Please email me a copy of our tracert results.
The following DOS command will put the results in a file that you can send.
Tracert Batteryfaq.org >textfile.txt
Or you can just copy and paste the output in a note.

Yes, you have a routing issue.
If I see the trace route output and compare it to mine I probably can tell which router in the list has it's tables screwed up. You can complain to Bell South but you probably will not get anywhere. The problem could be anywhere along the 19 hops of the route.
Let's see what the trace route says.
You know this problem will magically go away whenever the failing router gets it's tables updated.
The site you are looking for is hosted in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.
Hopefully it is not a static route problem in someones router along the way.
