My best friend from high school is a Q&R manager on this project, he was in Everett yesterday and called me . . . he couldnt see it because of the crowds as it throttled up for take off. He knew I was watching CNN so he wanted me to cue him as it left the ground. My only question is, if the wings bend like they did with no load - are they going to bend even more when there is?! I am one of the skeptics about using CFRP for air frames. Seeing this didnt help.

Rusty,
You ain't seen nothin'! The wing tips on a B-52 flexed BIG TIME:
http://www.faqs.org/docs/air/avb52_1.html
The wings were thick, with a chord (ratio of cross-sectional height to
width) of 15% at the root, tapering to 8% in the outer wing. They could flex
from 3 meters (10 feet) down to 6.7 meters (22 feet) up. The heavy engines
helped dampen wing flutter. There were two oversized "Fowler-type" flaps --
extending well behind the trailing edge of each wing -- with an aileron
between the two flaps, plus a row of spoilers on top of the wing.

When I was stationed Sheppard AFB our teck school was on the flight line.
They looked like big geese taking off.. Wing would flex up, flex down, flex
up again and then the body would lift off the run way. Very impressive

Marcel,
I was a Mechanical Accessories Repairman in the 99th Bomb Wing SAC, Westover
AFB in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts for three years. The "wing flapping"
was no big deal; what was really fun to watch was when they'd do a MITO
(Minimal Interval Take Off). I can't remember what the interval was (hey, it
was 40 years ago!) but I do remember that after the first two or three took
off the rest were all over the sky from the turbulence!

30 seconds in peacetime. 15 or less if actual war launch,
if I remember correctly. I've been in #8 aircraft, and
it was definitely quite rough!
There's a recent video of a 15-plane MITO from Minot AFB
(IIRC) and that is really hairy!
If the wings didn't flex, they'd break off. I forget the
amount that the Empire State Building sways back and forth;
same reason. Our Air Traffic Control tower here in OKC
at Tinker AFB would sway enough in high winds that the
water in the toilets would slosh back and forth and a long
telephone cord in the electronics room would swing as much
as a foot in either direction.

I think the wings have that curvature designed in. Recall reading about the new wing shape somewhere. Sooner or later, someone will post a profile of that AC and a conventional AC that shows a comparison.
The paint scheme certainly adds illusion to the swoopiness of the aircraft.
Rgd wing flap, ever seen the wings on a 747 going down a bumpy runway? Scary. Even scarier, I was in a 747 configured for all economy class (Asia) no bulkheads, could see from the back rows (where I was crammed) to the front and that thing curved like a banana!

I recall watching a C-5 take off from NAS Cubi Point in the P.I.
I thought it looked like a gooney bird - waddling and flapping until it
finally lifted off.

Yeah Chr$ I saw that too on a fully loaded 747 departing Singapore, all I could think about was we were headed non stop for the next 17 hrs to Frankfurt and that sucker was topped off with fuel. Geez talk about feeling helpless watching the wings stretch too, all those bags and people pulling it back down. Not as sinking a feeling though when I found an old ticket in my drawer in 1989 from a trip thru London 6 mos earlier and noticed it was Pan Am Flight 103

G'day,
The experience base of this group is AMAZING.
As they say Downunder; "been there, done that!"
Here's the info on the Empire State Building
http://www.esbnyc.com/tourism/tourism_facts_2.cfm
Building Sway:
The Empire State Building does not sway. it gives. With a wind of 110 miles
per hour, the Building gives 1.48 inches. Movement off center is never
greater than one quarter inch, thus measurable movement is only one half
inch, one quarter inch on either side.
I got a kick out of their semantics ("it gives"); this was definitely
written by a New Yorker!

Rusty wrote on Wed, 16 December 2009 13:13 | Yeah Chr$ I saw that too on a fully loaded 747 departing Singapore, all I could think about was we were headed non stop for the next 17 hrs to Frankfurt and that sucker was topped off with fuel. Geez talk about feeling helpless watching the wings stretch too, all those bags and people pulling it back down. Not as sinking a feeling though when I found an old ticket in my drawer in 1989 from a trip thru London 6 mos earlier and noticed it was Pan Am Flight 103

Gahhh! Flight 103.
I was on an L-10ll leaving Paris Orly. My boss and I were on the aisle seats in the middle row, french family between us. as we both realized we should have been wheels up and weren't, we both glared at each other, and one of us said "hope the grass is not wet at the end of the runway" the look of Panic struck the folks between us. Luckily that old tri-star finally managed to commit to the sky!

It's a bit hard to be sure with all the exhaust smoke,
but I'm pretty sure these are NOT G models, but
earlier versions since they appear to be the "tall tail"
models. The last of these were the "F" models, in which
I had some 1,500 hours as an EWO out of Carswell AFB, TX
and Anderson AFB, Guam between 63 and 66.
By the way, we referred to Westover AFB as Leftover AFB!

I forget the
amount that the Empire State Building sways back and forth;
same reason. Our Air Traffic Control tower here in OKC
at Tinker AFB would sway enough in high winds that the
water in the toilets would slosh back and forth and a long
telephone cord in the electronics room would swing as much
as a foot in either direction.

Mac,
You're right; I believed the title of the film!
I was on a TDY out of Leftover Airplane Patch and Parking lot to Anderson
AFB from May to July of 1966!
When I got back I had orders to head for Travis AFB for C-141 Training and
then on to the 616 Military Airlift Support Squadron at Ton Son Nhut in
Saigon for my last year in the USAF.
