G'day,
I stopped at a Grainger store during our tour of the Mid-west this past
summer and was told that I had to have a business to buy from them.
Has anyone figured a way around this?

Sure! Have an address and phone number that is in the phone book. Print up some business cards. Go in and sign up for an account. Pay cash so you don't need any company checks.

After dealing with their "business only" attitude, I simply order through McMaster-Carr and don't have to put up with Grainger's "policies". Even though I have had a business for over 30 years, I'll still give mine to those that appreciate their customers. Even small orders are cheerfully taken and shipped rapidly.

This is very location dependent. Some have no problem with a cash sale over the counter and other places are not so friendly.
Solve it all, ask someone that has an account for the account name and phone number (like me), tell them yo are on a remote job for Hamilton-Standard and you need parts to finish the job and will pay cash or as also recommended - buy from McMaster Carr. The problem there is no store front. They have to have a street address to ship it to. Even as fast as MMC is, you still have to wait at least a day.

Matt,
Thanks for the info. Actually I have a problem with Mc-Master Carr too. I
bought lots of stuff from them when I was living in Hong Kong customizing
Harleys in my spare time. Unfortunately I never opened an account. When I
retired to Australia and went to order something they advised that they no
longer sold overseas without an account and I couldn't open one. A number of
GMC Mates have helped me with this problem by forwarding stuff I ordered
from their homes to Australia.
Having said all this for the hell of it I am going to try and get Grainger
account as I do have a Australia Business Number. I can come up with a
business card and I do have a phone listing for my workshop which I will
change to my business name: Overkill Engineering! ;-)

Just to finish up this thread -
Donnie at Jim K's place worked on my coach for about 3 hours last week and came to the conclusion that the Carter fuel pump was defective - too much pressure for the carb to handle. He replaced it.
I finally had a chance to drive it today and it is much better. It stumbles a bit when cold, but the idle is much more stable and the stink is gone. No more big black sooty curbs either!
This just goes to show you that Jim's ASME Certified (or whatever) fellows confirm the wisdom of the net. You all nailed it.
